this is about my husband rafa. we live in the uk. he's type 2 for many years controlled with pills/diet/exercise. now been told he needs to have insulin - have appointment with diab nurse tomorrow. is it normal that he be prescribed insulin without seeing a doctor/specialist diab doc? will the insulin prescribed be based on what is "best" for him or under the NHS will it be the least expensive? what about "inhaled" insulin? this is certainly very expensive. I'm in a tither - silly really but i wondered if anyone has any advice. really appreciate any help. thank you, bebeleke :?

Two very important questions that need to be answered so that we can get a better picture of his situation, but as for inhaled insulin (if indeed it has been fully tested), that will not available from the NHS.
We can only offer an opinion based on our own experiences but would like to help you all we can .. worry will only make your husband feel less able to cope so perhaps he can write on his own behalf and we will try to help him to the best of our limited abilities.

mmmh, you're absolutely right, he needs to come into this forum. thank you for replying. in fact when we saw the diab nurse today she told rafa that she'd had a more in depth look at the results and that he would not be put on insulin just yet. he has to go back in three months. she also said that inhaled insulin was not an option as there were different schools of thought on this. right, i shall try to persuade rafa to come in here since it's such a friendly site. once again many thanks.

I was in the same place as Rafa four months ago and its a shock to be told that ..But I kinda knew deep down that the Exenatide they had me on for nearly 7 months wasnt working anymore...
The Diabetic nurses at the surgery liase with the Gp and talk about it at length and they can put you on it ..once upon a time they would never even try drug or diet control they'd just stick ya straight on insulin if your hbn1 comes up a few times as high or your sugars wont go up or down...
I got given the new drug Exanatide as I mentioned it doesnt work for some it did for me for the 1st few months but soon I was back to super tired super moody and super loo visits! lol so I was expecting it ...
i'm so pleased he has been given a 3 month rebate lol..if he behaves himself he may not even have to go on it...but IF he does heres what to expect...
it's a bit of a shock and he will feel a bit depressed and bewildered at first..and it will be hard for him to give up what he likes...still is for me..thing it you can eat what you normally did but in moderation ..but dont expect the insulin to be a magic wand that lets you eat what you want all the time...he has to be careful.. They wont start him on a high dose..he will have to go on a low dose and do fasting blood tests every morning...(that gets old very quickly but its vital they get a base line reading so they can adjust it back and forth!)
It varies on if he is Hyper or hypo glycemic...and he may actually be referred to the hospital diabetic team like my dad was...our surgery have a dedicated diabetic team and they are fantastic and are available for the most silliest question or panic moment...my diabetic nurse is a little over Zealous and we have many arguments over my diet...lol as a veggie I like the odd treat and if I gave up all she said I had to I'd be dead of malnurtrican by now :evil: :lol:
Rafa will have the odd D.I.D diabetic in Denial day...they are normal...and to be expect you almost go into mourning for your old food habits....and I still have a few did days..four months down the line..but come to realise it all shows up in your readings and you cant hide it..as it shows up on your review bloods... 8) :?
I do hope he does well and does not have to go on insulin but if he does then its not the end of the line and you soon get used to injecting yourself...(if he has to use that method) its amazin how your needle phobia vanishes when you realize that giving yourself a shot could save your life...and make you feel a heck of a lot better than you do already...
There are many great peeps here all in the same boat..so he wont feel as if he is the only one in the world going thru it...we all feel like that sometimes and thats why boards like this help...and are welcome...and not to be melodramatic a life saver..
