type 2 turn into type 1????

Hi everyone
I'm a little confused today. I've always been told that type 1 and type 2 diabetes are 2 completely differently illnesses, which I am comfortable with and totally understand.
So I'm having a conversation with someone today who seemed very knowledgable about different illnesses and he said "has anyone ever explained to you that your type 2 diabetes will turn into type 1". I said no, he said that he had been talking to an "expert" and he said to him that if a type 2 diabetic lived long enough their diabetes would eventually turn into type 1.
Does anybody know if this is true? I'm positive I have always been told this would NEVER happen. I'm going to see the DN in a few weeks so I will ask her, but just wondered while I'm waiting if anyone can answer me this.

Unless you have been misdiagnosed as T2 when you are really T1 then no T2 does not eventually become T1 - you can become a T2 on insulin but that doesn't mean you are T1 - everyone's an "expert" eh

It can happen, but I am not sure under what conditions, unless it's simply a case of all the beta cells in the pancreas eventually dieing and thus you stop producing insulin. Kristin over to you

No. Type 2 does not "progress" or "migrate" to type 1. Yes, a type 2 can require insulin, that doesn't mean they become type 1, it simply means their type 2 diabetes is now treated with insulin. Just because all your beta cells are dead and you are now insulin dependent, that doesn't change what type of diabetes you have. What determines the type is what causes the beta cell destruction. In type 1 it is an autoimmune attack. In type 2 it is everything else (diet/exercise/stress/shift work/hormone stressors/etc).

Some people are initially misdiagnosed as type 2 when they are in fact type 1. This appears to happen due to age related assumptions. Type 1 is still referred to as "Juvinille diabetes" but it is an autoimmune disease which can occur at any age. It also happens when people have an "unusual" presentation of type 1, because they have a slow onset form (LADA/type 1.5) so the immune system is slower to kill off the beta cells and it appears, for a time, as if type 2 treatments are working.
 
Hi. As others have said T2 doesn't become T1 in the longer term other than an initial mis-diagnosis. In general T2s will have insulin resistance causing excess insulin in the body which can't be used. T1s will have a low level of insulin in the body due to islet cell failure.
 
Cannot a T2 also at some time have an autoimmune response cause them to become T1 just wondering.
 
As @JohnEGreen says a T2 could develop an auto-immune condition, killing off his beta cells, redering him a t1, but otherwise he will remain T2, unless he was a misdiagnosed LADA, late/slow onset T1.
(Remember T2 in effect means you are D but we don't know what, probably not T1. It is a "catch all" category)
 
Only if they're misdiagnosed. Some people are told they're Type 2 initially but are then revealed to be Type 1 - particularly common with those Type 1s who are diagnosed as adults @Kristin251 i think this happened to you?

There is something called 'double diabetes' when a Type 1 develops insulin resistance, a Type 2 characteristic. But they haven't changed from Type 1 to Type 2.

Some Type 2s progress to needing insulin, but they're still Type 2s - just Type 2 treated with insulin.
 

It's amazing how many non-diabetic people know experts! problem is this one is an expert in talking rubbish. In brief - NO!
 
So a T2 can under certain circumstances develop T1 or T1.5 but then thay would be T2 And T1 but if the question was can a T2 change from T2 to T1 then I would agree the answer is no.

I would agree A T2 can Develop T1 but T2 can not metamorphose into T1.
 

They could possibly be referring to what has happened to me. What can happen with type 2 is that over time (and I'd say this would vary from person to person) you can wind up with beta cell damage which means your pancreas no longer produces sufficient insulin that you need. I'm now on full time insulin therapy as a result. I'm not classed as type 1 because I do not have antibodies present to show it's auto-immune. I'm guessing this is perhaps what the person you were speaking to was referring to. The other possibility is that you can develop type 1.5 and that is an auto immune disease like type 1 except that the antibodies take longer to develop (they say it's an average of 4 years... but I'd say that will probably vary from person to person as well). So there are 2 possible scenarios.... either insulin deficiency develops, and/or it's auto-immune. This is my understanding anyhow. I've not heard of a type 2 becoming a type 1 as such... not unless they were misdiagnosed as type 2 in the first place when they were in fact type 1.
 
So a type1 misdiagnosed as type 2 can develop type 2 and become a type1+2.
How unlucky is that?
See how bad a misdiagnosis can be?
Moral of it all is even if all type 1 diabetics get cured, some will still develop type 2. So managing type 1 well doesn't guarantee no diabetes to beat, even after a cure.

You can be an insulin resistant type 1, which in effect is double diabetes. But if your diagnosis of type 2 is definitely correct then you could process onto insulin, in which case you would be an insulin dependant type 2. Unless you are massively unlucky and have an auto immune response that kills your beta cells you will never be a type 1

If I had a choice I'd be only type 2 as some declare they have cured their diabetes. Type 1s have to have an organ transplant, at mo. Which is very very rare.
Ultimately we all have a disease which damages every organ and interfers with every system in the body. A common enemy.
 
I was type 2 for about 6 years controlled through diet and exercise. However prior to seeing bs going up I was VLC for 20+ tears, ever since Atkins came out. I just felt better VLC, lost weight, had more energy etc. all my routine fastings were normal until about 6 years ago when I had a really nasty virus. I still was able to control it through diet and exercise but about 3 years ago it got harder and harder. Weight started dropping and I didn't need/ want to lose weight. Then. 2 years ago I dropped 20 pounds in about 2 months. Drs misdiagnosed me as type 2 and had me on type 2 meds that eventually killed my pancreas. The exact opposite of the meds I needed. Fast forward, I am 52 now and have been on insulin for 2 years. Gained my 20 pounds back in the first 2 months and then it stopped.
I believe but of course can't be sure it was the virus. That's when things progressively got worse and the first time I was told I had high bs. That's when I got my first meter and it took two weeks to bring it down

So was I always type 1? I don't think so.
It is true type 1's can be insulin resistant and also true some type 2's require insulin.
I never wanted insulin but now I would kill anyone who tried to take it away. Lol. It's been a challenge but I've got it figured out now.
 

Just out of curiosity, why do you think that you were initially type 2, and not always LADA?
