Type 2
Hi all,
Over Christmas I was diagnosed with type 2 (hba1c 57 which over 3 weeks went down to 55) I saw a diabetic nurse who told me to just eat healthy & exercise which I have been doing, my only problem is that I've been having a few 'funny turns' usually after I've worked 6am-2pm I feel very sick & dizzy despite eating at 12, could this be due to my blood sugars? She's told me I don't need to test :/ I'm also suffering with a viral throat infection & wondered if this affects anyone's diabetes, thanks for reading!

A viral throat infection is going to make it difficult to tell what's what until you have got over it. it could, of itself, be causing the sickness and dizziness and it could also be affecting blood sugars, which just might make you feel a bit odd.
You say that your diabetic nurse said to "eat healthy". I wonder if she gave any more details or how you interpreted this vague remark. Much of the advice handed out by the NHS is of little help to diabetics and will do next to nothing to bring down blood sugars to a normal level, so you need to be looking round this site (I would advise the Low Carb Forum) and try the site, dietdoctor.com. Also, your DO need to test, for a while anyway. How on earth are you going to understand this disease and the effect of different foods if you don't?
My initial advice is to cut out all sugary things and try and get over your throat infection, then get yourself a glucose meter, start testing and moving towards a low (or lower) carb diet.
good luck
Sally

Hi, Sally andJames gives some good advice. When I was first diagnosed the members on here have had good advice and been supportive. Yes my blood sugars went up when I had a virus. If your practice will not give you a meter then I suggest you purchase a Sd codefree as the strips are cheap in comparison. The meter is invaluable as Sally and James say because each of us behaves differently with items of food. Just keep on browsing and looking at the site and pick up the tips that fit you. Good luck

Hi @Twinnylinz , welcome to the forum! Have you had information for @daisy1 yet? If not, I am sure she will be along soon. There is some excellent advice to get you started.
Most of the NHS medical profession all seem to say "you don't need to test" for T2D but it is the only way to see which foods make your blood glucose (BG) rise. When I am ill it usually goes up dramatically and takes ages to come back down (weeks sometimes).
A viral throat infection will link to your ears, which can make you feel dizzy too.
I should see how you go, drink plenty of fluids and if it hasn't cleared up in a few days go and see the doc.
But the only way to see if your bloods are up or down is to get a meter - I too use the SD Codefree (the strips are a bit cheaper).

Hi Twinnylinz, I was diagnosed the first week in January 16, Hbac was 80, and I've had a few dizzy spells (feels like I'm falling forward). But this week I've also got some kind of a cold virus, very fuzzy head and runny eyes and like you, I have been feeling sick most of the day. I couldn't eat until about 4pm. Everyone on this site is great and very helpful and informative, I don´t know how I'd have managed without some of the guidance on here. I have ordered the Codefree machine and can't wait until its delivered later this week so I can see what my BG levels are at home after eating certain foods instead of waiting a few months at the doctors. Hope you feel better soon. :)

Thank you Sally I've been following the low carb & low gi & had been feeling a lot better, I stick to soy & linseed bread, porridge & the occasional portion of noodles, I don't eat these every day, she said to just eat healthy & exercise & that if I wanted I could eat carbs but not a lot, I know now I should have asked more questions but being new to it I didn't realise, also I've had the dizziness & feeling sick for around 3 weeks before the virus.

Sorry for the late reply everyone & thank you for your comments, I for some reason was unable to comment until today, had an appointment with my diabetic nurse this morning to ask a few questions & she checked my blood, 9.9 which she said is normal after eating breakfast & that I still don't need to test, she said my repeated bouts of dizziness, sweating & shaking are not from my diabetes & it's because I'm tired still unsure of what to do
