Why are some T2 not prescribed any meds and just control with diet? Is there a golden number that indicates meds are required?

Most type 2 sufferers can control blood sugars on a low carb diet. Many people here used the LCHF diet (Low Carb High Fat). See www.dietdoctor.com for examples of what to eat. See also the video link by Sarah Hallberg in my signature.

Many type 2 medications like metformin only have a small effect on blood sugars. A low carb diet has a much bigger effect. If you can get your blood sugars down to non-diabetic levels (HbA1C below 42) via diet, then medication may not be required.

Exercise and intermittent fasting also help.

I was prescribed tablets with no mention of diet, but I was so very ill that I stopped taking them, I was losing the will to live.
When I had my first follow up test I was rather peeved to find out just how good my result was - Hba1c 47 - once I'd got over the shock of realizing just how effective low carb eating had been.

At diagnosis my HbA1c was 53 and my fasting plasma glucose was 7mmol/l. Medication was never mentioned. I was given some dietary and lifestyle advice and told to return in 3 months time. That was 4 years ago, and medication has never been mentioned at all because I am well controlled on diet only. In other words, as things stand at the moment, I don't need any medication. Of course this may change in the future.

I was diagnosed with a HbA1c of 52 (7.8 BG).

I was told that between 48 and53 is considered Diabetes good control and they prefer not to prescribe meds if you are between these two figures.
