i have been told that i am type 2 after 2 blood tests .I dont realy believe it as after reading other peoples story on the furum who were told they were like 8.2 and 12 etc why am i diabetic at 6.9 can any one explain please :?

Hi, Your 6.9 is not surprising. I am diabetic at Hb 7.1. Someone with more knowledge will come along soon and tell you the precise levels for an non-diabetic. Although 7.0 is at the beginning of the scale, it is over what it would be if you are not diabetic. the Hb is an average of 6.9 means your blood sugars could range from (for example) 5 to 9 on a day-to-day basis.

The fasting blood glucose readings for a non-diabetic should be between 3.5 and 5.5. If you've had 2 fasting readings around 6.9, you could well be at least pre-diabetic, more probably definitely Type 2, and in your place I would take it seriously.

You seem to have been caught very early (so was I) and it definitely makes it easier to get control of your blood glucose than if you go undiagnosed for years. You also have less chance of diabetic complications (blindness, amputation, kidney disease) than if you've gone undiagnosed for years.

With any luck it will only mean making a few changes in your lifestyle - diet and exercise - and losing weight if you need to. It's not unusual to go into "denial" when first diagnosed - I was in denial for 6 months, but fortunately I had the sense to go back on my favourite low-carb diet immediately. Now I think that diabetes diagnosis was the best thing that ever happened to me! :D

I think of diabetes as a "condition", not a "disease". It's something I have to live with, but it doesn't rule my life. Okay, so I can't eat sticky cakes and cream buns; I have to watch my intake of bread and potatoes; I am limited in my choice of chocolate; but as I've been overweight all my life, that is nothing new  But this time, I have to take it seriously.

Take the time to have a read around this forum, and don't be afraid to ask any questions you like - no such thing as a silly question on here! There are loads of experienced diabetics on here who will give you practical help with managing your diabetes - or, if you've not quite got to full-blown diabetes, will help you keep the worst of it at bay.

In fact - "come on in, the water's lovely"
