The best someone has ever said to me about having Type 2 diabetes was the last diabetic nurse I saw recently, she had a real attitude problem as though she knew it all and it was the way she old me I needed to loose another 10lbs to get down to my ideal weight 62kg this is a person who sat in a chair and needed to loose more than lbs I was so annoyed I felt like asking her had she ever been tested for diabetes. :arghh::arghh::arghh:

I think it was when my brother-in-law who lives in Sweden and has had T2 for about 4 years and takes Metformin said you can eat anything you like when you take Metformin as that is what it is for. He thought my husband and I both T2 were really silly to restrict any foods he said what was the point of taking the tablets if we were doing that. I tried to explain about lower carbs but he just said he would not do that if it meant not eating foods he loves. He is 78 so it would be difficult to convert him now I think

Have you tried the eat well plate?
I was misdiagnosed as T2 before diagnosis.

Also, always have something like baked potato and baked beans for your lunch!

There's n old thread somewhere on this topic which should also make for interesting/entertaining/frustrating reading.

My own favourite (which I've posted about before) was when I saw our practice so called diabetes "expert" for my review: I'd taken in printouts of my test results - which to his credit he was actually interested in - but then spouted the usual "type 2s don't need to test"... though it would be OK if I continued doing so as a hobby... :wideyed::D:D

Fortunately for both him and me it was a one time only encounter, as since then my general GP has now also become my diabetes support contact, and he's never had any issue with me testing.

And my husband (who ought to know better) has come out with some real dozy gems regarding sugar, and has become an instant expert who doesn't believe I have any understanding of what my LCHF diet entails when he's actually proved himself to be quite clueless.

'Just exercise and diet. T2 is a lifestyle choice, you know!'

The saddest thing is that this level of ignorance crops up on the forum regularly.

I do agree that lifestyle choices have some impact for some T2s, and that we can usually benefit from improving aspects of our lifestyle. But that is true of 99% of the population - including the plonkers spouting such drivel.

However, if being an obese non-exerciser caused T2 then every obese person would get it - and they don't. It is a minority condition amongst the obese, while slim fit people get it too.

I was told at a gathering of pals ( some total frenemies ), that I was CHOOSING not to eat massive platefuls of sandwiches and cakes like a 'silly diet thing' as opposed to protecting myself of long term medical problems.
Although one of them was well impressed that I had lost half a stone and thought diabetes 'had it's positives' HAHAHAHA, she was shocked when I said I would rather have the 7 lbs back and be non diabetic. Some people would literally slide down a giant cheese grater to have a beach ready body, idiots.

Unkind people, failure to take personal responsibility.
My nurse is T2. She has 13 siblings all T2....I kid you not:)

She is about 20 stone, but was 27 stone and is doing a great job of getting the weight off.

She was so encouraging to me when I was diagnosed 7 weeks ago and spent 40 minutes with me explaining everything I initially needed to know.

There are some good folk, faithfully serving in our amazing NHS:)

What eating plan is she following to get her health in check? Seems odd to me to be a diabetic nurse with diabetes. I mean, if she's supposed to be the "expert" on teaching others how to manage or reverse diabetes, it's a poor example to be morbidly obese with t2 herself, you know? It'd be like going to a gym only to find that your personal trainer is some beer belly sportin' dude with a smoker's cough. It would cause me to lose faith in their ability to help me.
I'm not suggesting she's not lovely, but I think the medical field needs to start setting examples if they want Joe Public to follow their leadership. Still, great on her for losing seven stone!!

She's always been big, loves people so trained as a nurse, became diabetic and so started to think specifically about it and took and is taking steps to rectify and control it. I think the onset of her condition encouraged her to get the specialist training and migrate to this area within a practice.

There is no doubt she gets kick back and a abuse....she has told me so.

For me I'd rather have somebody grappling with the challenges, plenty of pragmatic knowledge and empathy.

Works well for my disposition. :)

I think that is unfair.

We have MANY conversations on here about how T2 is not necessarily down to weight or lifestyle, and if this woman and ALL her siblings are T2 then that is a strong clue for a genetic origin for hers.

Add in the fact that the NHS believes T2 to be both progressive and requiring a rising drug treatment regime, and this woman is leading a wave of new info. She has lost 7 stone. That is pretty awesome, in my book.

Remember that low carbing is NEW to many, and has been fought by the establishment for decades.

"It's like doggies and bunnies racing round a track". No, I don't know what it means but it is silly and the dietitian said it so it qualifies for inclusion. The second most stupid thing she said to me was, "Would you like to make another appointment?.

People do come out with some nonsense. As is very obvious from above - it is more worrying when the stupid comments come from diabetics cos it makes you wonder how they are still alive!!!

At one of my reviews when I said that my hba1c of 36 was lower than I thought because my meter indicated that it may be higher I was asked why was I giving myself sore fingers as I didn't need to test!

I agree with @Brunneria here in that this an unfair comment. I've always are healthily but never managed to lose any weight. When I tried a vlc diet it almost killed me as my body began 'shutting down' and I was referred to an endocrinologist who, after blood tests etc, said that I was one of his few patients that could honestly blame their metabolism for their inability to lose weight because it was too efficient and goes into starvation mode so I would never be able to lose weight safely. In addition my thyroid couldn't make up its' mind whether it was over of under active - it now has and since starting treatment and cutting carbs I have lost 3 stone - still more to lose but it's a start.
