I think I need to post here as my fasting bloods are causing me concern even though I feel fine

9.1 on waking. 8.0 an hour later after moving around and a large glass of hot water with lemon. No breakfast yet.

Diana - is your 9 your usual (within a range) fasting level? As I have suggested on here often, in my experience, the fasting reading is the last to reduce. When mine did eventually go down, it dropped by 1.7 on that specific overnight, having gone up by 1.5 overnight from the previous nights postprandial reading. (I'm not sure that's too clear o_O.). Each time mine has reduced to a new discernible level, it has done it by dropping a visible notch. It hasn't been a slow creep south.

Do you snack in the evenings? Personally, I never snack. I never have, pre or post diagnosis, but, I find if I have a glass of fruity red in the evening my fasting reading will be up slightly.

Just stick with it, and if you feel you want to see more action, perhaps cut out any "treats" for a few days and see if that bears fruit. (Pardon the pun.)

It's all a game, and quite a bit of it is in our heads.

Hello @AndBreathe

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply and with such a comprehendable explanation too.

My usual fasting level is at best 7 and at worst 10.3 (once). No, I don't snack in the evening but I do have peppermint tea at bedtime to take my meds with. I eat around 5.30pm and try not to eat any later, unless I'm socialising.

I'm encouraged that my 2 hours after eating numbers are coming down which suggests to me that I'm responding positively to the change to LCHF diet. After breakfast today they were 6.8 and the same after lunch too. I'm happy with that improvement which is now a typical daily reading after meals.

Thanks for sharing your experience with fasting numbers being the last to reduce. It could be what's happening with me too

Thanks so much for the encouragement.

Diana

i am working hard to understand how the body works, i also have high 5.2 in the morning.there was once i went to gym in the morning and surprisingly the glucose level remains in 5.5. my doc told me that the liver is responsible for the energy needed during sleep. the liver will starts to empty its glycogen storage. but in the morning, if it did not have anymore glycogen to supply, it will starts to burn fats and muscle.

now the blood glucose will drop, at this time if we do exercise , the liver will produce glucose by converting fats. its good at this but the body will need more energy to convert fats and musle to glucose. as such it will burn more energy than the simple carbohydrates.

8.1 this morning, a bit deflating after the 5.8 and 6.8 either side of dinner last night, I'm putting it down to dawn phenomenon.

Hi @sanguine, AndBreathe has a good theory which may apply to both of us. The fasting levels can be the last to reduce.

You're doing so well with your daytime readings, don't be too discouraged

Thanks Diana, I've heard similar from others on here. Discouraged, moi? All this mutual support is doing us all good I'm sure!

I wish there was a way to ignore certain threads totally - this would be one on my list. I find it totally demotivating comparing myself to others, especially considering fasting is probably the hardest level to control.

If there is a way and I just haven't seen it, can someone please tell me how? Thanks.

As a relative newbie, I'm actually finding this helpful as it is only by seeing comparisons that I can gauge my own progress or pitfalls.

Here's my story....

I was scheduled for surgery in January and after going for my pre-op assessment, I was summoned urgently to the Diabetes and Endocrinology specialist practitioner.

He explained there was concern about my glucose readings and because of the risk of complications, surgery was now on hold until I could bring my sugars down to a more acceptable level.

I must be one of the few T2 patients who has been given a testing kit free of charge. He took my bloods using it (mid morning they were 13.9) and told me……...wait for it……. to test every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and highlighted the times in the Home Monitoring Diary which came with it. Monday readings should be taken after breakfast (blue highlighter pen used for idiots), Wednesday should be taken after lunch (pink highlighter used for idiots) and Fridays should be taken after the evening meal (green highlighter pen used for idiots)

As I left, he said over his shoulder "You may like to look again at your diet. I expect you were told to eat plenty of carbs…." I said I was.

That was on 6th January. I've heard nothing since. I presume my operation has been cancelled indefinitely without following up my progress using the Idiots Guide To Glucose Monitoring

Thankfully, quite by chance when I took my daughter to see the nurse (who is also the DN) at the surgery to have dressings changed, she casually asked how my diabetes was going and I told her I now had a blood monitoring kit and was testing 3 x a week. She handed me a prescription for testing strips and lancets and after reading about how many of you have to pay for yours, I'm lying low.

Thank God for this forum. and for this thread which has helped me understand the importance of daily fasting readings as opposed to Monday, Wednesday and Friday readings. Needless to say I now test at least 6 times a day but the fasting reading is the most revealing.

The testing routine you were given could be a very good one for people with limited access to strips, especially if they're testing new foods/meals. I'm so grateful I live in Australia - we have something called the National Diabetes Services Scheme. When we're diagnosed, our doctor signs a form and that allows us to join. Then we receive a card that we present at the chemist each time we need strips, lancets and other consumables. If we ever exceed the limit, they send us a letter. No prescription needed. Plus we get all the major tests annually - our GP actually has to provide a written treatment plan for each of us to our equivalent of the NHS. I only hope our system stays the way it is, though with a conservative razor gang now in office, who knows what the future holds?

Michael Gove and his insane educational? policies!
Just checked my meter for the past week and my fbg ranges from 6.3 - 7. I thought that was ok-ish, but looking on here now I am not so sure :(

Does this seem high? I am a T2 carb avoider on 1 x 500 metformin a day.
Same as you. Was recently on 2 metformin but dropped to 1. Today 6.2. Yesterday 6.8.

What are they for the rest of the day? How do you feel when they hit between 8-9? It makes me feel really dizzy. I find if I drink loads of water it seems to help bring them down. When do you eat brekkie after waking? When do you take your meds and when do you eat your last meal? Now that I've bombarded you with questions , please follow up your op with your doc. Given your recent good news with daughter, your family will need you more than ever shortly! Take carex

I feel the same way as you. I revived this thread a while ago as I was interested in other people's fasting levels but soon found I was unfavourably comparing my numbers with, for me, unachievable fasting bg's of other posters. It was rather demotivating so I stopped.

I know I am at the extreme low end of things, at present, so if it helps I'll stop recording on here.

I started as a motivator not to slip upwards for me, but as that doesn't seem to be happening (right now), I'll desist from posting on this thread.

I do think, as a concept, it's a good idea to have this thread, as it could give newer people an idea of the ranges achievable.

Nooooo!!)!!! Post away! We're all different and we all respond to different things! Some will be motivated and some won't! It wouldn't do for us all to be the same or like the same things. Life would be very boring! You definitely cheer me up!
