Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

I'm not saying 6.8 is awful, but it is way off my usual personal ranges.

Hello Bluetit- even though you may not get back on for a day or so!! Lovely to see you though, must be awful when you can't choose what you would normally, hopefully you came down ok later?

what was it later? Chips and bread is a fair whammy. And as a one off I'd just go with it. Hope you are enjoying break as weather has been rubbish.

Cereal is up in the 50+ per 100g. Not really a choice for most of us. Total. Greek yogurt is around 5.5. Lot of us go for yogurt with a few berries for breakfast
The problem with cereals is that not only are they high in carbs, the carbs they contain are highly soluble and so are very quickly digested. The combined effect is that they cause a lot of glucose to enter our blood stream very quickly, our pancreas is not able to deal with it in such a short time and our blood glucose levels spike as a result.

The glycemic index of a food tells us how quickly the food causes our blood sugar to rise. It is a relative measure with the value of 1 being the glycemic index of glucose itself.

For best control one should limit carbs and where possible choose carbs with a low glycemic index.

Testing our blood levels before and after meals educates us on the effect of different types of foods and different quantities of these foods on our levels. As I said earlier the target is for the two hour after meal count to be within 2 mmol of the before meal count. If it is not then you should either chose a food with a lower glycemic index value or one with less carbs ( or a smaller quantity of the same food) until you can meet the 2 mmol target.

Once you hit this target consistently, you should see a decreasing trend in before meal counts as well.

I wouldn't agree with that, I buy low fat versions of most things, very few have sugar in them.
Possibly several years ago, a few headline brands did, but now most versions are similar.

Always read the label though, the one you don't will be the one that is full of sugar.

Hmmm.... Most if not all low fat versions of foods I have looked at, and that's an awful lot. Have increased sugar levels

I wouldn't argue with the ones you looked at, but I did a specifically low fat diet for a year, and still eat low fat since.
I didn't find a problem.

Sounds like you are ailing with something. This will send your levels up. Take care.

6.1 this morning, much better. Still getting leg cramps. I have to increase my walking, but am so unstable on my legs. The month before diagnosis I lost so much strength in them and it is not coming back as fast as I like it. When I am tired like this week my legs are weaker and the cramps higher. I go one holidays in a month for a month, so will try to get to the pool every day.

Are you on a statin at all. One of the adverse side effects can be cramps. If so you should ask to be swapped to a different statin that suits you better.

17.6
didn,t feel well during the night and tested a few times and levels varied between 17.6 amd 19.8

4.6 again this morning. I am giving blood later today so it will be interesting to see if this makes any difference to tomorrow's reading.
