Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

5.3 this morning, ok considering I was wide awake at 4 am again and hot!
Freezing here too- I'm currently sat in the hairdresser's covered in tin foil, the things we do !!

An expected 5.7 this morning. Spent four and a half hours in A&E last night with a serious Uniary Tract infection bought on by my enlarged prostrate.
However I slept like a baby once I got into bed.
Don't really "like" this mandingo- hope you feel better soon

BACK FROM THE DOCTORS......oops sorry for yelling, but a little excited.

3 months ago when diagnosed I was 17.9, my 3 month is 6.7. I am happy with that and the doctor was really happy. My urine test was fine, my iron normal and according to my doctor my cholesterol excellent.

Last week when he ordered the bloods he gave me the balanced diet, eat carbs lecture, this week he said, whatever you are doing diet wise keep it up because it is working!

Now need to work on bringing it down some more.........happy feet!!!!:D
Wow!! Dance and yell away - big well done to you msvelvet! !

3.8 Bedtime (scary) nibbled some cheese and nuts 0.36am. This was after a spike earlier (3 pints beer) of 10.3 at 9.30pm 6.5 at 11.04pm
5.0 Fasting Pre Breakfast

Yep, scary. It would have been the beer that made you drop so low after the initial spike.

8.7 this morning.

Anxiety and stress makes glucose readings rocket. Yesterday after the DN cancelled my appointment my readings went an all time high of 15.9. :(

Hi Bluetit
I know about the alcohol effect, but 'non diabetics' this is their range isnt it, doesn't it start from 3.8, when do we know or don't we ever know, (when being diabetic), this is dangerous for us.

I felt OK in the Low Numbers, it was just the fact of going to bed and wondering whether they could drop more.

I think you did the right and sensible thing by having something to eat. Some people see these numbers all the time, others will feel ill. Our livers can't kick in to help out if they are busy clearing the alcohol.

3.7 this morning for me. All very much in my 3.5-4.5 personal range, so no concerns there, but nonetheless an interesting day all-in-all.

Going back to my pre-dinner meal yesterday, I tested a fairly routine 3.8 for me. I felt I might by around 4.0, so the 3.8 was fine, but a smidge lower than I might have expected, but I was hungry – big time! Dinner followed as I had a hearty portion of Mr B’s Cottage Pie which has melted cheese atop the mash. Oh boy, I enjoyed that! Two hours later, I found myself with scoring 5.7. Now, for me that’s an almost unheard of score. I retested and got a 6.0 and a second 5.7, so went along with that. A rise of 1.9 is significant for me. I rarely see much over 5, although with mash I have seen 5.5, if I’ve been a hungry horse. 20 minutes later (having been gob-smacked by the 5.7), I was back at 4.0. Reflecting, I may have been on the way up with a liver dump pre-dinner, but that’s pure speculation. I’ll never know.

I don’t normally test before bed these days, because, frankly, unless I felt bad, I wouldn’t be acting on it anyway, and my scores don’t drive the activity. But, as I’d had some odd (for me) readings, last night, I did. 3.2. I retested and replicated the score (another 3.2 and a 3.3). I felt absolutely fine, so off I went to bed, interested to see where I would be this morning, trusting my liver to look after me.

Whilst I was a bit miffed to see a score of almost 6, I was at the same time I was actually happy, as I just don’t see “bigger” numbers, which simply have to happen to support my HbA1c scores. I would so love to wear a CGM for a month, to really understand what goes on.

But, in summary for anyone new reading this, please understand it has taken me a year to achieve low numbers, and mine are pretty low, but comparison to many well controlled diabetics. My body seems to have recovered well, having got to grips with my diet and trimmed up. But, if you are purely diet controlled and see unexpected numbers, don’t panic – even if they are unexpectedly low. Provided you feel fine, there’s no pressing need to do anything. If you feel uncomfortable with the numbers you see, and/or feel unwell, then take whatever action seems fitting, for your circumstances.

Thanks for this AndBreathe, an interesting and informative read.........

An interesting read @AndBreathe . I've recently started a bit of experimenting and testing at 1hr and it's fascinating what the body can do. This morning I tested at 11/2 hrs post breakfast and was a bit shocked at 7.1 - retested at 2 hrs and I was 5.1 so obviously something's working somewhere.

I always test now at 1hr and 2hrs. and with "naughty" foods, also at 1.5hrs. I agree with @cold ethyl, it is quite an eye opener if you haven't done it before. I'm happy though, whatever the spike, as long as my 2hr reading is acceptable to me.

I also do some random tests during the afternoon once the 2 hours are passed. That can also be surprising as I tend to stay at somewhere near my 2 hour level (6's) much of the afternoon, only dropping right down by before tea.(high 4's/low 5's) Fascinating stuff.

Beer is known to have a nasty habit of first lifting glucose and then causing big drops. Not really the most appropriate drink fore diabetics unfortunately :-(

I take it you re-tested that 3.9? Do you often get a spike of 3mmol/l after 1 hour with a carb meal, then a big drop? That sounds to me suspiciously like Reactive Hypoglycemia, but I am no expert on this.
@bluetit 1802 I have largely avoided any carb heavy meals by and large until recently; but last week I had a 1 hour rise of 5.7 (!) which reduced to just a 2.0 rise at 2 hours and a 0.7 fall (to 3.9) after 3 hours. The figures from last night also show this sort of overshoot. I will have to test out some more and will have a look at Reactive Hypoglycemia.
Oh and no I didn't retest the 3.9 - maybe next time!

Thanks
Maxwell

Do you have shares in SD Codefree these days? ;)

Was the rise of 5.7 or to 5.7?

If you have been avoiding carbs, you will also likely have a certain amount of enzyme lag if your body is being required to process a greater carb burden that it is used to.

@AndBreathe it was a rise of 5.7. So before was 4.6, 30 mins 7.7, 1 hr 10.3, 90 mins 8.5, 2 hrs 6.4, 3 hrs 3.9. This was last week after a baked potato. I wouldn't say that I avoid carbs, but have generally kept them to a daily average long term of 100g or so. My readings from last night were less extreme; 4.1 before, 7.1 1 hr and 3.9 2 hr and 4.8 at 4 hr. As I said to @Bluetit1802 more testing required!
