Hi fizzgigg!

Firstly, congratulations on your pregnancy!

Do you have a specialist team to care for you in pregnancy with regards to your diabetes? Insulin requirements do change in pregnancy and once in the 2nd/3rd trimesters, your insulin needs will increase, but you will need support in doing this and in having the confidence to increase your amount as needed rather than waiting for your next appointment.

Who have you seen so far in regards to your pregnancy and diabetes care? Is there a specialsit diabetes midwife at your trust you can contact?

Loosing hypo warning signals is also common in pregnancy and you should be testing your levels before you set off in the car and if you are doing long journeys, stopping regularly to retest, obviously making sure that you have supplies in the car, and if on the low side, you do not set off again until your levels are safe.

I was lucky when I was pregnant, I had weekly appointments where I saw my own DSN, the obstetric and medical consultants and felt very supported. It was also possible for me to speak to the DSN on the phone between appointments if necessary.

Pregnancy is an emotional time, even when straightforward and in the absence of anything like diabetes, I hope you get the support you need to ensure you have a healthy pregnancy and are able to control your diabetes, which is so important at this time.
