Ultra processed food

@Poshpots - Going back to your orignal post - as an 83 year old T2 woman, I work on the simple basis that when I buy processed food if more ingredients sound like chemicals than actual food then that's definitely off limits for me, though my favourite "Er what!!" combination so far has been frozen prawns with added sugar...

I also came across this discussion now, even though it’s a bit old. In the meantime, I found out that the term “ultra-processed” isn’t just a nutritionist buzzword, but it’s actually the basis for lawsuits in the U.S. From what I’ve seen here, there’s a whole legal battle over how products are presented on labels.

I always have the same confusion you do when I’m looking at the ingredients or picking out ready meals. Sometimes it feels impossible to tell if something is “ultra processed” beyond the basic sugar, salt, and oil numbers. I usually just try to pick things that look like real food or have ingredient lists that make sense to me, but lots of packaged stuff is so far from homemade, even if it looks simple.

A good example is ground meat. When I buy pre-packaged ground beef, I look for the minimal ingredients and check the packaging dates. I read that a lot of food producers are switching to automated ground meat packaging equipment because it helps keep things fresher and safer, especially with fewer hands touching the product. That sort of automation makes me trust the hygiene a bit more, if nothing else.
