Under the weather

Hello All

Having been diagnosed as T2 two weeks ago I have been taking 1000mg Metformin per day and radically changed my diet. However, for the past week I have been feeling decidedly 'under the weather'. Headache, stomach cramps and generally feeling as weak as a kitten. Is this normal behavior for Metformin and will it improve? I am due to see my GP next Tuesday for a review but wondered if I am just feeling a bit sorry for myself or if other Metformin users have had the same type of reaction or symptoms. Thanks in advance.

Hi. It may be that you need to have your prescription changed to Metformin SR the slow release version. Many people find that with the plain version it gives them stomach/bowel problems. Other than that normally Metformin is not a problem drug for most people.

+1 The slow release metformin doesn't normally give the side effects that the normal stuff does. It's a bit more expensive, which is why it's prescribed unless you complain.

Hi Chris, the radical change of diet might be having an effect too, if you have reduced your carbs you might find that your body needs to adjust to the change, and of course its missing all that sugar you used to give it before you were diagnosed. I am sure that you will start to feel better soon!
