Hi,

Is a bg of 24 dangerous?
James age 12 has been taken off insulin for the last couple of weeks as he is honeymooning or possibly MODY not T1.
His level has been rising all evening and is now 24. At what point do i panic. What is the danger of it being this high?
Waiting for GP to call back
Thanks

Thanks, what is the risk? What might happen to him?
I just tested his urine with a diatix and its the darkest colour on the chart ++++
Thanks for your help

Debbie. This is an emergency, high Bg and ketones. Get him to A&E now please. No discussion !!!

hi debbie,
just wondering how your little darling is today? did u go to hospital?

Hi Debbie,
I hope James is better this morning,
when needing insulin hospitals often put children on a sliding scale regime with a bolus insulin to bring down bs and to get rid of the keytones, this usually involves 4 hourly injections. Then as long as glucose is absent from blood samples (but keytones may still be present ) they introduce a basal back into the equation. Naturally with James being in the honeymoon period it may be completely different. I hope all has gone well, and they find out if he is indeed T1 or Mody,
Take care, sending ((hugs))

Hi, Thank you all for your kind thoughts and advice.

I took James to the hospital, he is confusing everyone!

They made him fast for 15 hours to do a prolonged glucose tolerence test in the hospital so they could make sure it was safe to carry on with the tests. They also did loads of other tests to do with MODY and to rule out a tumour in his pancreas. Rather worrying to say the least!

He seems to have some high BG's and it seem that he makes his own insulin but it kicks in about 4 hours after eating. So he can go from 20 right down to 3. When i give him a tiny 2 units of insulin its causes a hypo. Its very irregular and difficult to predict but i have to say he feels much better now he is completely off the insulin. So at the moment we are just monitoring bg levels and waiting for results. The doctor (diabetes specialist) has gone away to read up on all the types of MODY to see if she can fathom out whats going on. His c peptide was 596 when the normal range was under 5. His cortisol is 405 but haven't a clue what that means. I beleive they have to work out a ratio of sugar level to insulin level to c peptide???? My brain is malfunctioning due to massive overload of information!

Anyway, we are back home and will hopefully get the results in a bout 2 to 3 weeks.
Thanks again for the support
Debbie

Hi Debbie,
Sounds very confusing, but at least taking him to hospital that night has put you on the road of discovery. I'm not suprised you've had brain overload with all that imformation to absorb. Keep us posted when the results come back, best wishes to you and James,
Take care,
Suzi x
