Hi I am a type 2 diabetic I have foot problems i.e. nerves and muscles and suffer from OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea). My current meds are:-

Metformin SR 500mg x 4 in evening
Pioglitzone 15mg 1 daily
Gliclazide 80mg x2 twice a day
Ramapril 5mg daily
Simvastin 20mg daily
Flixonase

I also have nightly CPAP therapy. I currently have inserts in my shoes to help ease the pain from my feet, but they find they are always sore and feels like they are burning and stiff in the morning, i cant walk too great a distance as the pain is unbearable and my ankles hurt, my podiatrist has checked blood flow to the feet and that is fine its the nerves and muscles causing the problem. Plantar fascciitus and posterior tibilaris.

I have been off work for the past 5 weeks due to extreme tiredness. I get up at 6-6.30am and Im back to sleep by 1pm I am having to go part time on my return to work because I cannnot function longer than that 3 hours per day which as you know has financial consqeuences.

My doctor has chopped and changed medication to see if this has an effect on my tiredness but none of this has worked. My BG average for the past 7 days is 7.1 30 day avge is 9.5. I am at my wits end and dont know where else to turn and just wish I could lead a normal life, my family life is suffering and with 2 young children my ability to give them the attention they need is suffering. I am irritable, moody, tired and fed up, any help and advice would be appreciated.

Awful isn't it. You have our support and sympathy. Sometimes just letting off steam can help.

Your BG levels are running a bit high and this may be a contributing factor to all your problems. What sort of diet are you on? Are you a skinny type 2 or do you need to loose a few?

If you feel able to share this info, we may be able to offer some suggestions.

wiflib, who's plantar fascitis is playing up something terrible at the mo.

I had a period of illness which meant i lost 1st 3 pounds in about a month, I am currently about 12st 10 down from 13st 12 pounds. With the extreme tiredness and aching feet it is difficult to carry out any form of exercise without going through an amount of pain.

Hi rluscombe, when i first started exercising I could not do too much.I started out by doing sitting down chair exercises.I bought hand weights and just sat and did arm exercises at first stopping when I got tired.Gradually I built this up to a respectable amount.Although it does not sound like much exercise it is amazing just how much it did help.
Please have a good read round the forum and you will find a lot of different advice on diets and helping to bring down your blood sugar levels. If we can help with this please just ask.

Been to the chest clinic about my sleep apnea they have adjusted the machine with a higher pressure, I have been to my GP today who has put me back on ramapril and told me to stop taking piogitazone because it may be the cause of the tiredness. I was put on pioglitazone initially to lower my BG which has worked very well in controlling it. I fear now that my BG will rise again making my problems back to where I originally started. He has signed me off for another 2 weeks so now I have been off work for 9 weeks. I am at the end of my tether with this and feel like giving up I am sure this thing has beaten me. Dont know where to turn or what else to do.

I knew it would happen. I have tested my BG before lunch and it comes out at 10.8 and I havent even eaten lunch yet, going to miss lunch to see what my levels will be before evening meal. I dont think the pioglitazone is the tablet that is making me tired, I still feel tired without it and also BG has shot up as well. Do doctors really know what they are doing when they mess around with medication

Short answer to your question about SOME Dr's....is no they don't.

As your Bg levels are going up you really need to get the help of an expert, an Endocrinologist. Get referred to one and then see what your treatment plan is. Bet it will be nothing like what your GP proposes. Tell your Gp you want a second opinion.

High Bg levels always make me sleepy so that is probably why you are tired all the time ? Get them under control and yopu will be so much more lively.

Ken.

I just bought myself a pedal exerciser. It sits under the computer desk - and Iintend to use it for about 15 mins per day. I realise this isn't a huge amount of exercise - but anything is better than nothing, and it all adds up.

Do you think something like that would help you?

Also, try to get hold of the Collins Gem on low Glycemic Load - there is lots of helpful information that will assist weight loss.

At the risk of being jumprd on by some forum members, I think you could be a candidate for a reduced carb diet. In any case it won't hurt you and might well help. If your BG average is 7.1, whilst on pioglitazone, you could probably cut your cqarbs quite drastically. Try cutting out sugar completely. that's natural as well as added sugar, then reduce cereals, baked goods , potatoes ( and other roots) and grains down as low as you think you can bear. To prevent hunger, boost up your fats a little. This should help seriously with your BG control, and energy ( you don't need carbs for energy whatever you've been told before)
Try this for a week and see if it suits you. Now for the bad news. If you have neuropathy in your legs and feet and improve your BG fcontrol, sometimes the nerves hurt a bit more while they are healing. It goes off eventually as you get better.
To add to your list of possible exercise equipment. Try Resistance bands. they are cheap and come with instructions. If your budget is large, Pilates is brilliant!

Going to the GP again this week, removing one of my meds has really not been good. 95% of my BG tests are over target. They are hovering around the 11's and 10's. I dont know why he messed around with my meds in the first place i ws getting better results with it. It has made no difference to the tiredness I am suffering, my feet are so sore cannot walk no more than a few hundred yards before they start killing me and have to sit down. Have my follow up appointment with the podiatrist on friday for ultrasound.
