Urgent Hospitalisation

I am curious to hear thoughts on this. Firstly we live in France , so maybe things are different here, my partner who is Type 2 and currently not on insulin has been told by our DR that he needs to go to hospital without delay. His 3 month reading near 13 ( sorry we still use the old reading). The DR said he will have to stay in for several days. To me I have never experienced this, when I went on insulin many years ago the nurse came to my house and spent time with me teaching me how to inject and explaining how to inject versus carbs. And was on hand for support in the early days.
My partner is very anxious about all this, my question is I suppose is this the norm nowadays. Clearly he needs to be on insulin by going ot hospital for 3/4 days seem over kill? He had no other conditions, good blood pressure , very active. He is 62 and a reasonable weight now. Any thought please.

Hi orchidlady

Like you I have no experience of this, and do not know what the usual practice might be in France. I'm sure there are others who might be able to help.

To help understanding, the 13% A1c reading translates to 119 in mmol/mol. A high reading certainly but I'm aware of people on here diagnosed with similar or higher readings who were not at the same time admitted to hospital.

Best of luck.

Not exactly the same but slightly similar, I was diagnosed in hospital when admitted as emergency for something else, my BG where in the 28 - 30 range (finger prick) and my HbA1c came back at 11.5, I was in hospital 8 days but the last 3 of those were for the diabetes only and wasn’t allowed home until my finger prick tests were less than 12 consistently, I was on a sliding scale and they put me on insulin before leaving and was told if I had 3 consecutive reading of over 13 to call the ward.

They may be admitting him as an emergency to get his numbers down quickly and safely

I wasn’t on the insulin very long once I got home and reduced my carbs

Thanks for the clarification on the numbers. I do have experience as I have been Type 2 for many years and insulin I was helped by a specialist nurse and mange my condition quite well. My partner is in denial has not been taking medication or testing. on one occasion he did test it was well into the late 20's. Hopefully this will be a wake up call. I realise taking insulin for the 1st time is a daunting prospect.

I do not have first-hand experience of French health system, but if I were you, I would persuade your partner to do as the doctor recommends.
The French health system is supposed to be better than the NHS, but I do not think that they would want to waste resources by suggesting a hospital stay if it was not beneficial.

The French health system is amazing. . Think he has resigned himself this needs to be sorted. Though did not stop him going to work with a packet of crisps and a KitKat.

oh dear. Denial is not just a river in Egypt. Hopefully if he accepts the admission they'll get his levels (and his brain which is sometimes more difficult) sorted
