Hi I'm sorry this is going to be long winded but could be massive! I have been a type 1 diabetic for 8 years now from the age of 14 I am now 22. I am completely off insulin and have got full restore of my pancreas by doing nothing? My doctors can't understand what has gone on in my body for 8 years, injecting insulin every day 3 times a day to not needing any and full restore of my body! I'm sorry if this sounds stupid but I really think that whatever has gone on with my body needs investigating to maybe find a cure for type 1 diabetes? I'm looking forward to hearing you replies

What do you mean by 'full restore' do you have any blood results to explain? It's impossible to know what has gone on in your body unless your GP gives you full blood results. You will need to get c-peptide and antibody blood test results from the past and compare them to the same blood results as now. It's possible that you were started on insulin so soon that you managed to preserve some of your own insulin producing cells and they have managed to regenerate to a certain extent allowing you a honeymoon period from insulin.
Great news about being off your injections for the time being though I bet it's a relief
Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 23 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.

Hi thanks for replying and yes it's a massive relief I was diagnosed at the age of 14 with type 1 diabetes and it stayed the same kind of routine for 6/7 years then I noticed that I could lower my dosage by half and it wouldn't do anything to me? So a few weeks ago I went too see my specialist and I told him I'm going stop taking my insulin and see how I go, he advised not to because my sugars will go through the roof, but I went ahead and stopped the insulin, been a week now of no insulin and perfect blood sugars, 5-7 all the time even after huge meals, the drs are shocked and want me go in Friday for emergency blood testing to see what is going on? To me it feels like a miracle but I'm still testing my blood sugar 3 times a day just so I no diabetes won't creep back up on me

Obviously I hope you are magically cured for whatever reason, but please be careful about raising hopes.
You are the exception, not the rule. Many people have taken a long time to come to terms with their condition, as I imagine you had to at first. So hearing things like this raises the "it could happen to me" part inside them and they'll sit and wait for the day it does. Sadly for us it most likely won't.
I'm interested in your blood test results. As Mo said, a week isn't THAT long, and 5-7 is still a diabetic range. If your pancreas was working normally it would be lower than that. Perhaps you were a misdiagnosed type 2? Now you're in better control your body is being more cooperative.
Lets wait and see!

First above all it's far too soon to say that you are not insulin dependent : please watch your levels very carefully, they may gradually start to rise but they may also rise very quickly it you develop an infection of any sort.
For interest though there are people who find that they were misdiagnosed in the first case and have another type of diabetes and it's not just a case of T1 or T2, diabetes comes in many different varieties.
MODY, (a genetic form of diabetes)
This occurs in about 1-2% of people with diabetes in the UK . It can be misdiagnosed as T1 when it develops in the young as in the case described in the link (it is genetic so normally other relatives have diabetes (often diagnosed as T2)

There are other types, sometimes they really don't have a label so get called 'atypical diabetes'
Some people of certain ethnic origins (mostly but not totally Black American and SW African as they are beginning to find similar types in other groups) have a type of diabetes where insulin dependence and hence the risk of DKA seems to come and go . This is sometimes included as a variant of type 1 (T1b) and sometimes called ketosis prone T2. (the actress Halle Berry who famously said that she had cured her T1 through diet may have this type of diabetes)
