Hello I am 52, female, Diabetic Type 2 and recently done a urine test for my DN, they have called me to say they need me to do two more, equally one month apart, I am concerned as she did not say what the issue was, I am a worrier, a terrible one tbh. My Metformin was increased from 1000mg a day to 2000mg a day - I was very complacent last year and had a nervous breakdown so didn’t keep a check on things and comfort ate. I feel terrified tbh. My levels were around 57 in my bloods when I have a blood test but last one came back 120 and this is because I was complacent. Please can anyone advise. Many many thanks.

I"d call your DN back and ask why you need to do two more?

You do have a right to know of course.

The pee test checks about 10 different things out so is a quick and handy reckoner. You can buy those sticks on the internet or at the pharmacy and do your own check if you want.

One thing they may be checking is the amount of glucose in the wee, Diabetics that are running high blood sugars tend to excrete more, so checking over a couple of months should see this indicator drop if you start controlling your blood sugars, but will remain high if you continue comfort eating.

Another thing they check is leucocytes which are an indicator that you may have an infection going on. The usual one they look for is a Urinary Tract Infection (or UTI) that diabetics tend to suffer due to the higher glucose extraction as mentioned above. Most of us get one from time to time, and they are quite treatable.

Another thing that is checked is protein in urea, that is an indication of kidney stress. Also some sticks check microalbinurea which is much the same thing.

The last one I remember being important was the ketones. High blood sugars with ketones is a warning of a condition of Diabetic Ketoacidosis which is a serious condition that usually indicates that your body is lacking sufficient insulin. However, a 2 month spot check is not really how this condition would be seen, but rising levels might need intervention. Low levels of ketones can be caused by certain diet plans such as Low Carb, and are not at the level of DKA.

The other indicators are not so important.
If there was any worry of something serious then they would be requiring blood tests instead. So they are just monitoring you and seeing if you can turn things around yourself.

To that aim of taking control, the purchase of a glucose meter could help enormously in removing high hitters from your diet, and I would recommend this. The term we often use is Eat To Meter.

The main thing you can do to bring the numbers down is cut out the starchy carbs and sugars. (hard hitters) since these turn immediately into blood glucose. You can refine your diet later, and there are many in the diet section of the forum where you can get information.

Also scan through the Testimonials and Susccess stories section of the forum to see how others have managed their journey.

Thank you very much, I will research the diets here. The one I have to do next mo th is check for raised ACR levels.

https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html <-- it's a place to start, if you want... If it resonates, try Dr. Jason Fung's book the Diabetes Code, dietdoctor.com and this forum's website, diabetes.co.uk (not .org!). All in all though, you've had a rough time... And elevated bloodsugars can make a nervous breakdown worse. And a nervous breakdown can up bloodsugars (due to stress hormones being released). It's a bit of a vicious circle, and you're on the path to breaking away from all that.

Start caring for you.

Hello and welcome to the site.

Have you ever tried to control diabetes through diet? do you have a meter? If not you have some choices to make.

I highly recommend getting a meter. This is the thing that will tell you from day to day how you are doing and what effect the foods you are. eating are having on your blood sugar levels.

I then recommend that you test regularly. Before meals and 2 hours after the first bite. If the rise is more than 2 the meals was not great for your body.

I like many found that my body needs a very low carb diet. all carbs turn into glucose in the blood- not just sugars.

I used to comfort eat and particularly carbs- I really miss them but some of the complications of diabetes are serious so I have made the decision to cut carbs and now eat less than 10 grams a day.

I'm a worrier too and stress can increase your levels but food is easier to control.

Good luck- read around and ask questions. The people on here are awesome and this site is the best thing about diabetes- they are wonderful. Ask for advice or vent- there is always someone here and we really understand how you feel.

Welcome and good luck.
