Vegetarian and low carb

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I am very interested in the low carb diet and know it makes perfect sense. i also visit another low carb web site the about.com low carb diets page - not strictly for diabetics - for anyone who wants to do low carb.

I find that low-carb means high protein and that as a vegetarian it is much harder to follow a low-carb diet than an omnivore. A lot of the recipes for low carb vegetarian meals are a) not nice e.g. tasty b) made with ingredients which are nigh impossible to source in my small town.

Are there any more vegetarians on this forum and if so - have you any advice.

I'm type 2 and at present not on any medication. I hardly test my BS levels at all these days.
 
Hi I was veggie in fact vegan and I am ashamed to say that due to the restrictions, I felt there was, of low carb [I was a carb fiend] I reverted to veggie and now I am back eating some meat as I seemed to get a craving for it, but I do try to buy organic. Sorry that's no help at all but I am with you on the difficulties of it, however others on here do very well as veggies so I must get myself into gear and start again with it.

Been searching and reading my vegetarian low-carb and low-gi recipe books (and truthfully the recipes seem not to be to my taste and use a lot of ingredients which would be hard to source here in my small town in Northern Ireland), also being part of a family I like my meal to fit in with what the oter non-diabetic people are eating.

However, I came across a carb-counter for most mobile phones - a) it's free and b)you can use your own foodstuff lists with it - check it out at http://www.johandegraeve.net/Home_English.html

Now investigating Chana Dal, a good source of puslse-based protein which has more or less no effect on blood sugar levels.

Hi Ziggy,

Chana Dal is made from split peas so it depends on whether you use green split peas or yellow ones. Green ones are high carb, 60g carbs per 100g. Yellow split peas are fairly low carb at around 12g per 100g.

Good grief, I hadn't realised there was so much difference!

Personally I have been getting away with the green split peas, in suitably small quantities, probably because they are relatively low GI. I boil them until al dente while frying bacon, and add them to the frypan as the bacon is finished, that also probably keeps the GI down to something my pancreas can handle.

I find most beans and pulses to work quite well but we don't get to eat them much as there's only so much wind mother can take!
