Very cold feet!

Hi, over the past two weeks i have begun experiencing very very cold feet. They feel like ice alot of the day, and when they begin to get warm, it causes some tingling and pain. I have experienced pain in my legs for a year now, doc not sure if it's sciatica or neuropathy, but now my feet are like ice, is this anything to be concerned about? Thanks.

Ask your doctor to refer you to a neurologist, I really dont think that if it is sciatica or neuropathy that both your feet would be affected, its usually just one. I wonder if it is a circulation problem, have you had your pulses tested? Do you exercise? Do you have signs of numbness and is it something maybe connected to your bg levels? I had neuropathy and whenever my bg went even higher than my usual high the neuropathy got worse too.

What are youre readings like?
 
well i'm on levelir 28 units and three metformin 850mg a day and my normal level is around ten. Also, i have been taking funny spells where i am sick and start shaking, thats when my blood goes to about seven. I knw seven is not low, but it is low compared to the figures i was having, i used to reguarly get eighteens and twenties.
 
I have bad pain down one leg, doc is saying it's sciatica or neuropathy with it only being one leg, but both feet are affected and it is very uncomfortable.
 
Your bg is still very high, though the symptoms of shaking and feeling sick could be due to your body telling you that you are going low because you are usually much higher.

Have you had your pulses checked in your feet, can you detect a pulse yourself, prod around there on your instep and see if the pulse there is weak or strong? It really is difficult to say whether its a circulation problem or neuropathy or sciatica, I am not a doctor and even a doctor cant make an online diagnosis, I think you should see your doctor asap and ask for futher investigation. Its also possible that these leg problems are due to mineral/vitamin deficiency, so do get checked out, oh and try to soak your feet (can be up to your calves if you want) in Espsom salts dissolved in warm water, just a couple of spoons of salts will do, this might give you some relief, the salts are very cheap to buy from your chemist.

Do you take any other meds apart from insulin and metformin?

Hi yes i take simvastatin, anti inflammatory for my leg, tramadol for the pain, labetalol for high blood pressure, i think its a trip to my doc, she says my hba1c of 7.5 is fine. She sometimes makes me feel i'm coming to her for nothing, it's so frustrating !
 
There's a possibility that the Simvastatin could be causing your leg pain.You should check this out with your doctor as this is a recognised side effect of Simvastatin.

I haven't cold feet, but I have had leg pain - twice.

Your BS is high. How is your cholesterol? If its around 5, try giving up the SV for a week or two I see if there is any improvement. See the current Readers Digest for a useful article on statins.

Stopping SV & reducing carbs has cleared my leg pains. I'm free of leg pain now.

My experience:

When I was diagnosed (2000) i had a numb sensation in my right thigh - the Dr thought it was diabetes related & blood tests confirmed it.

2 years ago I was on simvastatin (SV) for cholesterol & developed intense leg pain in the same thigh. It was at its worst on waking & I couldn't get out of bed - I had to move my leg by hand. It was alright moving about. A letter (NOT an article) in Balance reported muscle pain from SV. I stopped at once & within a week the pain had gone. The Dr & chemist confirmed the side effect & approved by stopping taking it.

Earlier this year muscle pain in the same leg returned. My BS readings overnight had drifted up from 6.7 to 7.2. Also I had the beginning of retina damage. It was crippling. I couldn't drive any distance (had to get the AA to drive me home from Dudley to Southall.) I couldn't play tennis or use exercise equipment. I thought my active life was over. Beginning of May I started reducing carbs as recommended on this forum. Up to then I had used the Diabetes UK recommended diet including complex carbs. The Dr has been satisfied with my control. (HbA1c 6.5 -6.8) It took 3 months, but the leg pain is gone & I am as active as ever. (At 69)

"Side effects" of 3 months of low carb - fasting BS down from 7 to 5.3 (my readings.) Freedom from leg pain. Cholesterol down from 5.4 to 4.3. Weight down from 13st to 12 st. I don't get so tired. No adverse effects.

Incidentally, I used to be aware when my BS dropped below about 5.5. Now my BS is lower, I don't get the problem.

Yes I think that getting the "wobbles" at a higher reading than most people is due to the fact that this is what your body is used to. I used to get weird at anything approaching 5, but when on the low carb for a while, one morning I had a 3.4 and felt fine. So definitiely your body gets used to the changes in the sugars.

I too have very cold feet, especially at night. I can go to bed warm, and have my feet turn icy in about 10 mins and then I can't get to sleep. Have been told that this is poor circulation due to earlier bad management of my diabetes.
 
Hello I had cold feet for a cuple of years and they hurt. I was diagnose with raynalds disease. After doing some research you will know if you have it and how bad it is. I just wanted to give you a heads up, its a posibility.

I suffer from my wife's cold feet & she suffers from my cold hands. We soon warm up :wink:

I attribute her cold feet to the blood pressure & heart medication (she is not diabetic) - her bp can go below 100/60.
 
I've always had cold feet! Long before diagnosed with diabetes.In fact I think I was born with cold feet.I don't find them very cold but I know they are if I touch them.Very handy for moving bed hugging husbands though! :twisted: :twisted:
