Hi I’m new to this so please bare with me. I have not been diagnosed yet but am pretty sure I have diabetes I go in to test on wed. I’m so frightened can’t function. I have had recent tingling on my upper toes and when I wake up sometimes have numbness in left hand and pinky finger. I’m freaking out. Don’t want to loose anything I’ve read some scary stuff. I am also deathly afraid of needles and hope I can be treated with pills looking for advice I have started making life changes and dieting no sugar for me anymore please guide me

You'll need to get your bloods done ... whether you wish to or not .... to confirm IF you have diabetes or something else. So for a half second sting, you better get over the needles phobia. It is NOT a big deal

Yes I know I’m going in on wed doctor can’t take me till then. Just really worried about the tingling and numbness

That could be anything and totally unrelated to diabetes ... if indeed you have it. First things first

If it is can it be treated or am I too late been going on for about a month now

Hopefully the "knowing" after you've seen the doctor will stop the fear factor. Even if it turns out to be diabetes, once you know for sure it's then possible to form a strong plan of action.

If you're willing to make significant adjustments to your diet in particular, you may well avoid both pills and needles. Even if the GP puts you on pills, you may be able to get off them after a while with significant dietary changes, and this forum will give you lots of advice on that.

Some people have reported fairly remarkable changes for the better. For example, not having had feeling in their feet for a while, then it returning.

If you can still feet things brushing lightly against your feet, and still sense heat and cold (and IF you do indeed have the start of nerve problems), I'd say you stand a good chance of making things better. But it's all speculative - wait till you get a diagnosis.

Thank you yes I can feel everything good in feet and hands. Foot is just a slight tingle on toes hand good feeling also but wake up in the night with numbness

I I pperciate all your time I’ll find out next week I guess. But the waiting is frightening

Regardless of whether you have diabetes or not, if you want the health benefits that removing sugar from a diet brings most people, bear in mind that the body doesn't really distinguish between sugar and any other form of carbohydrate, e.g. bread, potatoes, rice, pastry etc.

Hence what I was saying about "significant" dietary change. So if it does turn out to be diabetes and you want to run a mile from any need to inject things, brace yourself for a very different diet than the typical one.

Don't panic and try to stay calm till you see the GP. At least you'll be eating healthily for a few days no matter what you get told :)

Thank you but this was an eye opener for me. I’m changing my lifestyle and eating and never going back to my old habits. In the past few days I have really took all of this in and reflected on my life and lifestyle. I just hope it’s not too late!

Sounds like even if it isn't diabetes, you should pretend that it is, if you know you have an unhealthy routine and it's given you a kick up the backside :)

Good luck with the appointment.

All the time you can buy the cheap gluco-meter (normally there are 10 strips included) and measure 1h after your main meal. If the reading will be over 8, you have probably diabetes. Over 11 you can bet you have it. Under 8 there is big chance you don’t have it. This is solution for you if you cannot wait till official check. Depends on your psychic - what you prefer - to know something as soon as possible, or you are able to wait.

Well don't panic first of all!! Nobody likes diabetes but it's not a death sentence, and you aren't guaranteed to get those horrible complications. And even if you do suffer some damage from high blood sugars, such things can often be halted or reversed. If you have good control and put in the effort to control diabetes, you can live a long healthy life.

Tingling is a symptom of diabetes, but it could also be something easier like low vitamin B12.

If you are a T2, there are many ways of treating with pills or just diet/exercise. If you are T1 you will need insulin shots. However the needles are very tiny (I use some that are just 4mm long). I'm not afraid of needles but when I was first diagnosed I was scared of using them incorrectly and somehow damaging myself. It's very difficult to do that - your body is tough! After receiving education on the subject and practicing a few times it will get easier. And if not, professional mental health help has been extremely beneficial for some T1s I know who struggled with that phobia.

Good luck!

Hi all I took your advice and did a glucose test this morning it read 87 is this good or bad didn’t eat breakfast just a cup of coffee no sugar

Ohhh nooo!

You need to have a full blood test done immediately!!!

Hi, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 2 years ago and managed to become pre-diabetic within 3 months by following a low carbohydrate diet and as a result of the new healthy eating regime, I also lost 2 stone. I've maintained pre-diabetic status ever since and haven't had to have any medication. Getting the diabetes diagnosis was my catalyst for change. It's not all bad and there are lots of positive outcomes when you make the changes you need. Good luck with your tests.
