@ProjectMorris, here's is a list of abbreviations that some members put together several years ago on the forum, its not a comprehensive list by any means but a good one just the same:

  • Amylin (Islet Amyloid Polypeptide) - Slows the rate at which digested carbohydrate appears as glucose in the blood and thus reduces total insulin demand
  • Basal - referred to as the slow acting insulin used to cover your bodies own glucose stores
  • Beta cells - Pancreatic cells responsible for the production of insulin, amylin and C-peptide
  • BG - blood glucose (this is the measurement of glucose circulating in the blood)
  • Biphasic insulin - An insulin mixture containing both fast acting and slow acting insulin, usually injected twice daily
  • Bolus - referred to as the fast acting insulin used to cover food, typically carbohydrates, some cover for protein as well.
  • BP - Blood Pressure
  • Brittle diabetes (labile diabetes) - Most often seen in type 1
  • BS - blood sugar (as above)
  • CHO - Carbohydrate (Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen)
  • C-peptide - A by-product of normal insulin production
  • CTS - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • CVD - Cardiovascular Disease
  • Double diabetes - Comprises symptoms of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes
  • DSN - Diabetic Specialist Nurse
  • ED- Erectile Disorder
  • FS - Frozen Shoulder
  • Fulminant type 1 - An idiopathic subtype which has a very rapid onset and no honeymoon period
  • G.I - Glycemic index. A G.I value tells you how rapidly a particular carbohydrate is turned
  • G.L - Glycemic load. A G.L value takes into account not only G.I, but also the total quantity
  • GAD (Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase) - Antibodies test
  • GDM - Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
  • Glucagon - A hormone produced in the alpha cells of the pancreas
  • Glycogen - The storage form of glucose in animals and humans
  • Glycogenesis - Glucose storage, mainly in the liver and muscles
  • Glycogenolysis - The breaking down of glycogen stores in liver and muscle tissue
  • GNG (Gluconeogenesis) - The generation of glucose from non-carbohydrate carbon substrates
  • HBA1C - HbA1c is the scientific shorthand for Glycosylated Haemoglobin
  • HCP/HP - Health care professional
  • HDL - High Density Lipoprotein (the "good" cholesterol)
  • Honeymoon period - The period of time after a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes when there is better than expected blood glucose control
  • Hypo - hypoglycaemia (this means blood sugar level is too low)
  • Insulin - A hormone which causes most of the body's cells to take up glucose from the blood
  • Insulin analogues - Genetically altered versions of insulin
  • Insulin antibodies - An immune response to exogenous(injected) insulin
  • Insulin resistance - Normal amounts of insulin are inadequate to produce a normal insulin level.
  • Ketoacidosis - A severe accumulation of keto acids in the blood, resulting in acidosis
  • Ketones - Ketone bodies are acids left over as a byproduct of ketosis
  • Ketosis - A process in which your body converts fats into energy
  • Lantus - Long-acting insulin analogue used as a basal(background) insulin. Normally injected
  • LDL - Low Density Lipoprotein (the "bad" cholesterol)
  • Levemir - Long-acting insulin analogue used as a basal(background) insulin.
  • LHB (Local Health Board) Welsh equivalent of a PCT (Primary Care Trust)
  • Liver dump - The common term given to glucose production from the liver
  • Low-carb diet - A proportional reduction of dietary carbohydrate
  • MDI - Multiple Daily Injections - an insulin regimen adopted by the majority of type 1 diabetics
  • MODY - Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young refers to a number of dominantly inherited, monogenic defects of insulin secretion. There are currently eight different varieties of MODY
  • Nephropathy - Damage to or disease of the kidneys
  • NICE - National Institute for Clinical Health and Excellence
  • NSF - National Strategic Framework
  • PCT - Primary Care Trust
  • Peripheral neuropathy - Damage to the nerves of the peripheral nervous system
  • PP - post prandial (this means a period of time after eating, usually recorded as 2 hours but often 1)
  • Pump - Insulin Pump, used as an alternative insulin delivery method to MDI. The pump is connected to you 24/7 and pumps tiny doses of insulin thorought the day, with the ability to give extra doses at meals times and with snacks.
  • Retinopathy - Non-inflammatory damage to the retina of the eye
  • SHA - Strategic Health Authority
  • Somogyi effect (rebound hyperglycemia) - A high blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • TG or Trigs Triglycerides - the main component part of VLDL and a significant cause of strokes and heart attacks
  • Type 1 (autoimmune) - The most common form of type 1 diabetes
  • Type 1 (idiopathic) - All forms of type 1 which occur without a known cause
  • Type 1 (surgical) - Diabetes caused by partial or complete removal of the pancreas
  • Type 1.5 - Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA), also known as slow onset type 1
  • Type 2 - Diabetes mellitus type 2 is most often attributed to insulin resistance and relative
  • VLDL - Very Low Density Lipoprotein (the "very bad" cholesterol)
  • Young-onset type 2 - Anyone diagnosed with type 2 under the age of 45 is considered young
Sorry if my reply seemed a bit off it read worse than I meant. Thanks for posting the glossary I'm still leaning[/

No not really.

This forum is full of really super individuals who are putting themselves out to help others such as me who are having a real problem coming to terms with a confusing condition which seems to have a 1001 different switches all of which effect your blood sugar in one way or another.

The truth is we have a life limiting condition. We are unlikely to make our allotted years. For some this journey will include blindness, stroke, heart conditions or amputation. None of which are particularly appealing.

If I didn't have a family which depend on my income I'm not sure where I'd be and I have had some very dark days considering my options.

.

Whos truth is that ? Yours ? I don't mean to be rude, honestly I don't, but it seems like you haven't read anything that's been posted here.

Life limiting if not controlled, but the complete opposite with a well controlled diet and exercise, many people here go on to live a life longer and more healthy than they might have without even being diagnosed, simply because of the choices they made with diabetes being a motivation.

You can live just as long as you would have done without diabetes, it's a life choice. I know you're in a dark place right now but just try to grasp and absorb what others are saying, it doesn't have to be that way.

The NHS put out statistics based upon generations of poor control and advice.

Knowledge is key.

All the best.

Totally agree.

Following standard NHS dietary advice will lead to standard NHS outcomes (deterioration and complications)

Following the advice of experienced diabetics on this forum (the ones who have good control through diet, lifestyle and meds) will lead to a far better quality of life.

Personally, I sleep better, am fitter, less achy, less tired, have more energy, feel more positive, have lost some weight, and enjoy my food more now than before I had diabetes. And I'm confident that I have slowed, maybe even halted, that dreaded diabetes deterioration.

I have also made some GREAT friends here.

There are some astonishing success stories all over this forum. People losing huge amounts of weight. Lowering their blood glucose by massive amounts. Eliminating the symptoms of complications. Normalising their blood scores. 'Reversing' diabetes.

Getting a diagnosis of Diabetes is a very useful thing. It tells us why we've been feeling so grotty, and it gives us a choice about how we want to feel in the future - a future we can influence and improve with the right choices.

We are unlikely to make our allotted years.

Neither is the innocent kid hit by a wayward bus or me worrying myself to an early grave ahead of complications I just don't have. Stop reading the negatives and reach out to those who have done the seemingly impossible. In other words, dig deep. Many of us have. Try it.

I'm sure there's more.
The positives far outweigh the negatives for the vast majority of us here.
Some of the ladies here are busy breeding another generation.
They are not bringing those kids into the world thinking they won't be able to cope ... won't be able to be perfectly good parents.
Of course they worry about it but don't all prospective parents?
Somehow we have to make your glass half full instead of half empty and it isn't looking easy.
How are your family coping with you?

That is an interesting and perhaps challenging observation along the lines of "an inconvenience is an opportunity ill-considered"?

I'll share my experience so far and as such I guess readers will take it as being relevant or not :)

The return of lost energy and optimism beyond the dull thud of not even wanting to get out of bed sometimes has been a revelation. How many years have I been slowly edging to this, week by week, month by month that got me constantly tired, irritable and glum.

The last few weeks have been a challenge. I mean, if I had said two weeks ago I'd be eating cold fish, looking at baking kale, stabbing my finger willingly, taking a bunch of meds I'd have poked myself in my eye with a selfie stick.

Perhaps not immediately helpful to someone scared but I will offer this; I'm having a blast. Yes, things are not pleasant, I doubt change rarely is for me, but walking around town because I feel some renewed enthusiasm and disturbing the local chavs in my duffle coat and hat is... enjoyable. I'd never have said that two weeks ago.

Apologies, I do not want to disregard anyone who is scared, a part of me is scared too. I'd suggest we deserve to experience the other side of the coin as well?

Yeknodathon. ..you have made me smile.

"an inconvenience is an opportunity ill-considered"?

That is such a fabulous quote.

I like mountain biking and follow a guy called Ed Oxley who in one if his videos was commenting on an Aussie friends advice when mountain biking. "Chin up" not only sage advice so as not to get into trouble on the trail but also as an Aussie outlook on life.

If you don't mind I'll put your quote in my "emergency box" and look at it and others when the tide goes out and I feel down.

You have changed my day.

Thank you.

It is very normal to be scared, sad or angry when you are newly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The key is to make yourself deal with this situation. Putting off the inevitable is only going to hurt your long term health. The faster you convince yourself of the need to change your lifestyle to a diabetes friendly lifestyle the better off you will be.

Another quote for you,
Change your life today. Don't gamble on the future, act now, without delay.

Perhaps you should think more about the positive things being said in here rather than dwell on the negatives.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 almost sixteen years ago....I managed with diet only, even though the advice given then is now outdated, for the next thirteen years and then prescribed SR Metformin one twice a day.....you may say this is part of the progression of diabetes but I beg to differ, Metformin give a bit of a boost they don't actually reduce blood sugar levels by much and I haven't had to increase my medication since then....since being on here I have been lowISH carbing highISH fat......had my last HbA1c last month and it was 45, the lowest its ever been, cholesterol was 4.1, again the lowest its ever been, never had eye problems with my annual diabetic eye test, no neuropathy when have annual feet tests.

So please try to lighten up, its not all doom and gloom even after 16 years ......[where's the thumbs up smiley when you need one]

Ok everyone I'm now in prediabetic territory. The game now is maintaining it.
