Type 1 Very high glucose and illness

I am struggling with extremely high readings at moment.
I have a chest infection and am on antibiotics and steroids (not a good thing for my diabetes control).
I've not been below 16 mmol fasting and last day been high on my meter most of the time.(reads up to 27.8mmol)
I am giving 10-20% bonuses regularly but now feeling very nauseous, stomach pains and very thirsty/constant toilet visits.
What else can I do?

are you type 1 or type 2 and how much medicine are you on besides what you have mentioned here already...

I would say get as much rest too as you can while having the infection... especially sleeping and maybe also take some 500mg vitamin c´s ... I am not competent to help you really... so if your infection gets worse then get some help form the GP or diabetic nurse and where you can phone for help... ..

Thanks Freema.
I'm a type 1 on novorapid and insulatard. Normally very well controlled between 5 and 10 Mmols.
I'm drinking loads as I'm sooooo thirsty but that also means I'm peeing loads too.
Not sure how much longer I can go on like this as absolutely knackered.

I think you should phone to get some professional advice...

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-and-illness.html

in the link above there is written that with a blood glucose higher than 28mmol one should seek emergency help or phone NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

Here are sick day rules to follow to correct ketones and high blood sugar - https://www.stockport.nhs.uk/documents/PIL/50647_MED127.pdf

But if you have mid to high ketones and you're on steroids correcting is going to be difficult.

Definitely consider ringing 111 for advice. They might want to get you admitted to get you under control while you're ill. If you're having stomach pain and nausea with high blood sugar and ketones that does suggest possible DKA which has to be sorted urgently, so do call please.

Thanks catapillar
I just wanted to try and stay away as hospitals are really busy in our area at moment with very long waits.
My ketones are all over place but not been below 2 pluses in last few days.
I'll see how I go as 111 have never been very helpful in past as they lack that specialist knowledge.

I still feel rubbish. I have back and abdo pain now too.
I'm drinking loads and ketones are bit reduced. Don't feel like eating though as still nauseous.

Did you speak to 111 to get advice?

Having pain like that is worrying. Maybe it's nothing, maybe it's the beginning of an illness - but whatever it is, if I was you I'd get some medical advice as @Diakat suggests.

Went to ED and waited 4 hours on a chair after I collapsed in reception.
Had to monitor my own bms after they only did one initial one and bloods.:grumpy: Adjusted my own insulin for Dr to tell me I'm not dehydrated enough or DKA to be admitted.
I have to have follow up with diabetes centre tomorrow.
In meantime I'm shattered and in pain and resigned to a night of bms and peeing.:(
