Very high glucose insulin is not helping

Hi, I'm new on here, I'v been a type 1 Diabetic for 15 years now, and suffered with DKA on a few occasions, Although the past 3 days my blood sugars have been hitting 30 or over, I genuinely don't feel well, I'm doing extra quick acting (quite allot) but does not seem to be bringing it down, I don't have any keystones YET, but I'm worried that they are going to appear if these sugars don't stabilize. I don't know what to do... Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thank you for reading xxx

Hi. I'm not surprised you don't feel well with sugars into the 30s; that is dangerously high. What sort of diet are you having? Is it low-carb? Are you over-weight? Is your Basal insulin set to give you a morning fasting reading of around 6 mmol?; I have the feeling that may need to be increased. If you are overweight then you must reduce your carbs urgently to get the sugars down as the insulin may be being blocked thru insulin resistance. Do have plenty of fluids and seek advice urgently from your nurse or GP.

Thank u for your reply. I am overweight but currently doing slimming world diet and have lost 3 stone. However I have quite a good diet with lots of veg etc and cut my carbohydrate down loads, I've put my insulin up as I adjust it myself, they extra acting I'm doing just doesn't seem to be working at all. I've recently just had bloods done and come back quite odd, my salts were all very low, and my kidney function was bad. I've seen my nurse today and she said that my bloods are definitely indicating some kind of infection, but they just won't come down, I'm only 29 I have 3 children at home, I'm exhausted and feel so unwell. Fortunately I have a good husband who takes good care of me. Maybe I should contact some kind of out of hours physician tomorrow? Would I be wasting people's time? :-(

I'd certainly be contacting out of hours surgery, if not thinking about a visit to A&E.

id go straight to A&E if I were you. Perhaps a full blood test and urine test would be a good start and Id say that with sugars that high, youre probably really dehydrated and need to go on an IV asap. If youre dehydrated, your sugar wont come down despite lots of insulin.
Hope you get well.

Had a similar incident about 2 weeks ago. Turned out my insulin cartridge was dodgy, possibly got too hot. Changed the cartridge and did a correction dose. Got back to normal (as can be) within 36 hrs. Defo advise seeking professional help on this one as I did, but also drink plenty of fluids too.

Good luck!

Hope you feeling better already.

do be careful of your carb intake. Do you test your sugar frequently and what foods are affecting it?
Its the only way one can control the BS by testing regularly.
test before you eat and 1hour after, then again after 2hrs.

Take care..

This happened to me, however my other half watched me inject and for some reason I had started twisting my insulin pen not pushing it... so I wasn't actually giving myself insulin!!! *Silly Moose* Hope everything is okay for you now!
