Very high triglyceride

Hi guys

Just seen my doc who said my serum triglycerides were 9.9 last test (5.8 fasting) and this was very high, only advice I was given was to eat less fat really and I've just started the LCHF diet so I am a bit worried and confused, I'm about 3 stone over weight and only 35, apparently pre diabetic (impaired glucose tolerance) (main symptoms have been hypo like, but bloods have been a bit more steady if higher than before) less spikes and drops

is this still a good idea ? apparently my ldl can't be calculated due to how high my triglycerides are.

Details of levels below

serum lipid levles 30 July (fasting)

serum trig levels 5.8 mmol/l
serum cholesterol levels 5.4
serum HDL 0.71
Total cholesterol : HDL ratio 7.6
serum LDL levels (unavailable if trigs >4.5

14th July not fasting just had 2 I can see

serum cholesterol level 5.2
serum Trigs 9.9 mmol/l

Hi Greeny, most of us on LCHF find that triglycerides fall below 1 in a fairly short period of time. It is carbs that sends it high, while LCHF usually normalises cholesterol.

Hi, my triglicerides went from 3 something to 0.6 eating low carb, i was also taking statins at the time too though, this isn't advice but i think you need to do as much research as possible as fast as possible and decide the best way to go as that is the highest number I've heard anyone say they have, whatever you choose to do please keep us posted, I've always found cholesterol fascinating if confusing

I'm another one whose triglycerides fell once on low carb with moderate fats. (real dairy, no low fat products, eggs, meat etc.) They fell from 1.25 on diagnosis, to 1.15 whilst on statins, then to 0.7 after coming off statins. I concluded that statins didn't help as much as low carb does.

What sort of blood glucose levels are you getting?

Blood glucose are not to bad, now they are averaging around 6 fasting and 7-8 after food, before I stopped drinking and went low carb they were ranging from 3's to 8's so they have gone up bass line wise but seem more stable, my hba1C (sp) was 43

as for cholesterol, I'm not sure I am making complete sense of the readings (my liver function is high as well or one or 2 readings, they didn't explain ANYTHING to me

serum lipid levles 30 July (fasting)

serum trig levels 5.8 mmol/l
serum cholesterol levels 5.4
serum HDL 0.71
Total cholesterol : HDL ratio 7.6

There's a few other results but they are the serum lipid levels, I've seen 2 docs and been given no info until today hardly, 1st one just asked if I was a big drinker (which I am not) and I have stopped in last 6 weeks and had at most 1 bottle of red win per week, no beer other than 1 pint and thats my tipple of choice or pear cider but still got 4 cans in fridge from 6 weeks back, then after I said I wasn't a drinker just given a patronizing lecture on plat size and my weight (I am 2/3 stone overweight but not loads)

These are the guideline targets for diabetics

Total cholesterol 3 to 4
Trigs under 1.7
HDL 1.2 to 3.5
LDL 0 to 2
Total/HDL ratio under 4

If you find your not getting all the answers from your gp then ask to see another one if possible, or alternatively get in touch with the British Heart Foundation:

http://www.bhf.org.uk/#&panel1-2

The target cholesterol targets for people with diabetes are as follows:

  • Your total cholesterol level should be below 4.0mmol/l.
  • LDL levels should be less than 2.0mmol/l.
  • HDL levels should be 1.0mmol/l or above in men and 1.2mmol/l or above in women.
  • Triglyceride levels should be 1.7mmol/l or less.

There are a lot of very moderate drinkers who have been questioned by their GPs about alcohol intake due to bad liver tests. The healthy eating plate will damage your liver long term as will alcohol, no difference.

LCHF will help both your fatty liver and your bg and cholesterol in general. Keep at it.

Any previous history?

sounds like you have a fatty liver as well
are you going to see a consultant?
the advice I would give is different to what you have been told by your Dr, so take no notice, Low Carb and make up the lost calories with fats/oils called LCHF
have a read and see what you think
https://www.google.com.au/#q=lchf fatty liver triglycerides

Yeah I have started a low carb high fat diet a few weeks ago, seem to be slowly losing weight and think maybe 1 or 2 inch off my waist, feel **** but having a few more decent days than before, I suffer anxiety though and all this stuff is making it worse, I've had all sorts this last year like a colonscopy which was erm intresting
Got an appointment at hospital but its just a general appointment I think basically they don't have a clue whats going off, its not for another 6 weeks though

The advice you get just seems shoddy as hell and they get annoyed with you when you say your researching online *** do they expect you to do, I'm not taking a docs words as gospel, I don't trust half of them, I think they just wing it

I'd started cutting carbs down a fair bit but was probably not low carbs although I have been keeping away from white bread and pasta for a while, I started the LCHF around a month or so ago (probably around 50-100g of carbs max per day not inc veg) My bloods were taken 14th of july normal and 31st July for fasting

Previous History of what mate? illness yeah but not this cholesterol stuff, knew nothing about it tbh, My grandad has had a few strokes and my dad has diabetes and high BP plus high cholesterol

all I know is that LCHF wont make your worse and will help your liver and trigs, it won't fix anything which can be causing it, but that's where the Drs come into it. they will run a bunch of tests.
half of us are on antidepressants, so don't suffer feeling crook and tell the dr how you feel

Just a history of any blood tests.
If the cholesterol was taken before the LCHF, try it for the 6 weeks until your next hospital appointment.
Worth going back to your doctors for a fasting blood test again, about a week before.
If they think it's too soon, tell them you need one for the hospital appointment, as you've made a few changes to your diet, and you want to discuss the results with them.

I've had bloods done before but never told why and just had a receptionist ring up and tell it all seems ok, think they were just general ones, though I had some in Jan and was vitamin d deficient and ''one liver function was raised'' that was all the info given, I was having lots of bowel movements after a meal like within 20 mins 3/4 times probably 70% of the time after dinner but the vitamin d seemed to settle that...still made me go for a colonscopy though the bloody sadists lol

Great fun aren't they.
Still, I'll take anything the NHS are prepared to offer me, they can spend all they want keeping me alive.
I assume your's was clear? (I'm pleased to say mine was.)
