Hi the info from Desmond and following NHS resources you can obtain states Hbal1c 6.5% which is under 7 especially for a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic. Long term over 7 is not good. Not seen the NICE guidelines but the Desmond team stated readings should be between 4-7. so conflicting info here??. going under 4 is okay for type 2 this was confirmed by the Desmond team as non diabetics also go under 4. Better with lower readings aim low stay low.
HbA1c of 6.5% equates to 7.8mmol/l. Over this level on diagnosis, and you are classed as diabetic. You are mixing up your measurement units. mmol/l is the unit used on our UK meters.
The DESMOND readings of 4 to 7 relate to fasting levels, not post meal levels. This also follows NICE guidance, which says for type 2's fasting should be 4 to 7mmol/l, post meal at 2 hours under 8.5mmol/l.
In fact, for less well controlled type 2's, the HbA1c target to aim for is an HbA1c of 7% which equates to 8.5mmol/l.
I agree, the lower the better, and once we have some sort of good control we need to aim for non-diabetic levels, but those levels may well put newly diagnosed people off initially.
