Very Painful Eye. Advice Please!

My mum has type 1 diabetes, has had for over 30 years. She is blind in one eye, however for the past few days she has been getting a lot of pain in that eye, and feels like something is stuck in it, and it's red. She saw her eye doctor today who told her it was inflamed and gave her anti inflammatory eye drops, at the moment she's still in a lot of pain. Has anyone else had this, what was the cause and what treatment was given? Thank you

Hopefully the eye drops will clear the inflammation up, did they not advise on taking pain relief for the discomfort?
