Very sensitive to paraesthesia (pins and needles) despite low BG?

Hi guys,

I'm a 28 y.o. who was diagnosed with T2 (probably MODY) about 10 days ago. Had the usual signs of being very thirsty and passing a lot of urine; HbA1c was at 98 and my fasting BG was at 28, but avoided a hospital admittance due to no sign of ketoacidosis. Just giving all this for background incidentally, no need to link me to the 'Newly Diagnosed' cheatsheet, which I've already read, with appreciation.

Anyway, after cutting out carbs and reducing overall calories I'm now at a fasting BG of 5.8, which I believe is at the higher end of the 'non-diabetic' spectrum. However, I've noticed that I've become weirdly prone to bouts of pins and needles / numbness in my legs and arms - a couple of times over the past week I've woken up to find my hand completely numb. This always resolves itself in a few seconds when I remove whatever pressure I've put on it, but I'm confused as to why this is seemingly happening more now that my BG is low, and admittedly a bit worried about how it might progress.

Has anyone else had something like this? Could it be a nutritional deficiency due to my sudden change in diet?

Hi @ulurujamman

Congratulations on getting those fasting BG's to 5.8. I haven't experienced the pins and needles or numbness so I will leave it to others to comment other than if it is really worrying you take it to the doctor. I imagine your blood is flowing so much better with the improvement in your BG and that may have some inpact

I was waking with bad pins and needles in my arms and hands almost every morning, and this started in one arm in a milder and less frequent form before I was diagnosed as diabetic. For other reasons (lowish cholersterol levels) I've not taken my statins medication (Simvastatin) since last summer and the pins and needles has more or less completely disappeared now.

Might be worthwhile having B12 levels tested (especially if you are taking metformin). I'd also ask for folate and ferritin to also be tested. You don't mention if you're on medication, but other drugs that can interfere with nutrient absorption are the PPI /acid blocking drugs.

Thanks Indy51, B12 sounds like a very plausible culprit. I'll have a chat with my GP about getting tested. Keep well!
