Yesterday hubby and I decided to go out to the pub to watch the match, and as he has been such a good boy lately and has been toeing the line with his diet, I thought a couple of pints wouldnt hurt him. Well 6 pints and 5 hours later we head home, its about 5.30, about 7.30 he says he doesnt feel too good, ha ha, I think that will teach you to be a pig,bet your blood sugars through the roof! bBut noo! in fact its 3.8!!!! How did that happen?????

At the moment,Im afraid, yes. He was left to his own devices for 20yrs,which was how he ended up wit a hc1 of 97. He just used to shrug his shoulders at his ever increasing blood sugar readings and carry on regardless. Its like he's in denial. Something had to be done before serious complications set in. And about a month ago just to prove he still doesnt care, I went away for a few days and came home to reading in double figures. He'd been eating rubbish he knew full well was no good for him. He actually does drive me mad!!!x

Im just confused as to how lager could lower blood sugar. I thought it was basically liquid sugar. Everything Ive read warns against it. Any one got any ideas????x

I find have pint check carb half insulin but I am on pump then nibbles but is say he needs to figure out for him and his body

He is now feeling the effects of his binge. He doesnt feel at all well and his bloods are 9.6,they are normally around the 5 mark this time of day. And no I am not gloating,he really looks bad.x

Hi Jane
I had to give up on alcohol as it lowers my BS to the extent I hypo and then it ramps it right up it's a double whammy effect !.....last time I had more than a glass of wine I woke up to hear my neighbour on the phone to an ambulance !!! so easier not to touch the stuff ....i do miss it though !!!

lager not so much as the darker beers. It tends to ferment more to dryness.

Teh ones to really watch out for are both the higher alcohol darker beers as they tend to dtart out with a very high OG (sugar content) to be able to get the higher alcohol, but also tend to end up with a higher %age unconverted. Also watch out for the Mild type beers, dark, malty and lower alcohol, which tend to get their sweeter mouthfeel via a fermentation that's not allowed to go all the way, or through unfermentable adjuncts. Home brewing has been a hobby of mine since my mid-late teens

I've found I'm OK with dry wines, spirits, lagers and the lighter IPAs, but one or two dark beers give me a real spike.

Then, as others point out, the after effect as the body deals with the alcohol can be a hypo.
