Had a bowl of Muesili for breakfast with Alpro milk, 9am went for a long walk around a lake with my dog, came back cut a lot of winter jasmin down around the window, got to 11.20am an thought I would take a test, it was 9.3 so in case it was a duff reading Itook it again it was 8 7 my wife who is non diabetic was 6.1 what have I done wrong to get such a high reading after all that exercise >>>?????

Hi celast,

you ate a bowl of muesli. My book says that's at least 23g carbs and maybe as much as 30 and that's without the milk. The walk is great but you'd have been better off with something less carby before it. My homemade porridge is a treat and that's about 8g carb.

You were obviously very, very VERY dissapointed judging by the dozen or so posts!
Muesli can be quite high in carbs, so it was almost certainly that. Some may say "liver dump" because of the exercise, and who knows, but it normally comes down to food. Try testing again after the same food and routine another day. If you still get the same'ish reading, have a low-carb breakfast, do the same exercise (if there's any Jasmin left by now!) and test again. You will then know for definite what caused it.

definitely the muesli!
Breakfast cereals tend to be high carb. have fried egg and bacon instead, Delicious and shouldn't affect blood glucose much.
Last year, my husband and I took a cruise for our 40th wedding anniversary. I had a fry-up breakfast every day and my BG stayed down I ate salads for dinner and even lost 1Kg on the fortnight trip. { Ionly had a low cqarb dessert for lunches with a cup of coffee]

It's early days for you - you will get into a pattern of eating & its effects. Also exercise has a stimulating effect, so that You may find, like I do, that my BG often increases with exercise.

What was your HbA1c at diagnosis? How much has your diet changed?

I'd not touch muesli with a bargepole, but I can tolerate porridge, so maybe you could try that.

I would also say Muesli is your problem. Before diagnosis I used to have a bowl of Alpen for supper each evening, I never touch it now. Most cereals spike diabetics, but some can tolerate smaller amounts. The best thing to do is try some and test. I think shredded wheat is one of the better ones, although I can't touch that either (Nor would I want to tbh - yuk :D ). Perhaps you could try omelette, or bacon and eggs, Greek yogurt with a few berry's, cold meat and cheese instead?

Well I am not going to blame the much maligned muesli, in fact I think you may have answered your own question, see highlighted bit in quote.

Exercise requires energy which comes from the glycogen stores in your muscles and liver, first to be called upon will be the muscle stores as you start your walk, once this is used up if no more is forthcoming by way of glucose absorption from your blood/muesli, your liver will dump which will then send your bg levels up to the levels you are describing. I dont eat muesli but I believe it is low GI (I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong) which may not have been fully digested when you started your walk, so your liver dumps and then on top of that the glucose from your low GI breakfast is delivered.

Perhaps a different timing of your breakfast/exercise or possibly a high GI carby snack of 5 to 10g of carbs when walking to offset a liver dump may help.
