Hi Hen,

They must be getting desperate to be dragging out old news items like this! There was some research done in Arizona State University published in 2005 that found that taking two tablespoons of pure (unrefined and unpurified) cider vinegar immediately before a high carbohydrate meal has the effect of slowing the rate at which the carbohydrate is converted to sugar in the blood, so it therefore helps to prevent peaks in BS. The way in which it "lowers" blood sugar is simply to stop the peaks so that your body's own (or injected) insulin can cope better with the sugar load. The research showed that this slowing effect could result in an overall decrease in BS of between 2% and 4%. (So if your pre-meal BS is 7mmol/l, you could see a decrease of betweem 0.15 and 0.3mmol/l.

Over the years a few have tried it, but generally not for long because after 2 tablespoons of cider vinegar you wouldn't be able to taste much of whatever you had to eat. It is interesting that this was an isolated study and no other research establishment has thought it significant enough to follow up with further research.

Good Old Vinegar

As I've stated on here I've been suffering for over a week with a very severe chest infection which has caused torn chest muscles which have spread due to excess choking and retching, and basically not using hardly a thing as I've found out I can't use beachams or store equivalent due to my type 2, my dr told me that the robbutissin for chesty coughs sugar free is useless and all I could use was loads of menthol crystals, but after a week it didn't seem to do anything I was at my wits end, then I remembered an old wives tale of drinking 2 tblespoons of vinegar, so I thought what did I have to lose.
Boy I wish I'd remembered it earlier the s**t has been falling off my lungs all night I can at last breathe without breaking into chest ripping retching and coughing. At last I seem to be on the way up again. I'll have another 2 tblespoons again later on this morning, and at night and hopefully at the end of the weekend I'll be normal again (if at all possible lol!)

Knowing how everything seems to kick you when your down I'll probably find out that I can't have vinegar with statins and metformin lol, now that would really p**** me off pmsl though I did have a google and can't find anything so I think its safe lol. If you're suffering and can't have medicines go for it. It worked for me a few years ago I just wish I hadn't forgotten it

The old remedies are often the best! :D 8)

Hope you feel better soon - and actually did get some sleep last night, that was a very late (or early) post!

Vinegar & honey

Hello everyone,

I've succumbed to the dreaded sore throat and blocked sinuses bug that is doing the rounds in my area.

Funny how my immune system only ever allows me to be ill at weekends....especially bank holidays :x

Anyway, I'm reading my trusty book "Vinegar - 1001 practical uses" which suggests that I take a mixture of apple cider vinegar, honey and water 3 or 4 times a day. I know vinegar is good for folks with "betes" but what about honey?

Is there a particular type of honey that is better for us to use? Manuka for example?

For clarity, I'm not going to be taking this every day for ever more; just until I feel better.

I'm hoping one of the forum "Guru's" will enlighten me. 8)

Re: Vinegar & honey

Possible Drug Interactions

Theoretically, prolonged use of apple cider vinegar could lead to lower potassium levels, which could increase the risk of toxicity of cardiac glycoside drugs such as Lanoxin (digoxin), insulin, laxatives and diuretics such as Lasix (furosemide).

Because apple cider vinegar may affect blood glucose and insulin levels, it could theoretically have an additive effect if combined with diabetes medications. Apple cider vinegar may also lower blood pressure, so it may have an additive effect if combined with high blood pressure medications.

Honey is a sugar so will also have an effect. Depends on the quantity used. Manuka is higher in sugars than some other honeys, check the labels.

In the interests of continuity of information all the vinegar posts have been amalgamated into one thread.

Sugarless Sue. Forum Monitor

I'm diet only Sue, so no meds to worry about.

My concerns focus around the use of honey
I've successfully managed to get my BG to below 7 consistently now, but I'm worried that to start taking honey; albeit in a glass of water mixed with vinegar, might undo all my recent hard work.

Or will doing this for a few days simply give my a bit of a BG spike then resume to normal levels once I stop drinking my honey concoction?

In the abscence of any feedback from the forum I went to the supermarket and bought a squeezable honey with 6% lemon in it.

I'm taking a spoonful of that in hot water with a dash of cider vinegar

I would have thought this was feedback but obviously not what you were looking for.

I find vinegar very beneficial to keeping BS in check and usually have it in a home made salad dressing of olive oil, lemon juice & vinegar with a few mixed herbs whisked in.

I tried the 2 table spoons of cider vinegar in one of my attempts to try to control the DP. I have IBS and the vinegar gave me abdominal pain and the runs. And it had no effect onthe DP

Did you take it on an empty stomach or with food?

This vinegar thing, is it the reason that a glass or two of red wine seems to aid bg levels when drank with a meal?

It is the same theory apparently, as is having a salad dressing. I have found in the past that alcohol raises my BG for several days but I am going to have another try of this soon, just in case my body has changed  My brother finds a glass of red wine benficial, I keep thinking, well if it works for him, why not me? We have inherited the same diabetic genes after all!

Hi Sid,

I'm one of those strange individuals who actually likes the taste of vinegar, lemon juice and cod liver oil....................................and red wine too, obviously

Very strange!

Well I've been taking cod liver oil for 20 years, 19 of which in capsule form, but last year starting to take the liquid and take 10ml a day. At first it turned my stomach and I always ate something straight after, but now I can take it without the food but wouldn't say I enjoyed the taste! :?
