Viral infection and high BS

I have had a cold and temperature of 100 for 12 days and several cold sores for the last 3 days.

I cannot seem to get my blood sugars down below 7.7 at all, no matter how few carbs I eat.

Could it be the virus? and what can I do about it? I am too wiped out to exercise.

I am T2 diet only.

thanks

It probably is the virus causing havoc. You sound as if you are a bit run down. Not sure how you can reduce your levels while you're still infectious. All I can suggest is taking things easy, plenty of fluids and rest and if you don't feel better in a day or two get yourself checked out by the GP or diabetic nurse. Hope you feel better soon. Would send you a hug but don't want to catch the cold :)

Hi. Viral or bacterial infections do cause the body to raise glucose levels so that is almost certainly the cause

Hi Lucy!

Yes, it will be the infection causing it. I am insulin dependant and when I last had a cold/infection, my BGs went into double figures and stubbornly remained there no matter what i did. I had to double my insulin doses just to maintain 10s and 11s. This went on for about a week and then they came back to normal over a period of about 3 days.

You could try eating as few carbs as possible as you will be more insulin-resistant than usual, so any carb will have a bigger impact than usual, but I suspect your BG will still be fairly high - it's the body's defence mechanism. I'm afraid there is nothing you can do but ride it out.

Take care

I had a low grade fever after vacationing in Italy for a whole month and the same as you..mouth sores. Generally speaking it can be Herpes Simplex that hits when you are low if you have the virus in the past. It will cause mouth ulcers and in myself throat ulcers. Stay out of heat ...rest a LOT . You can ask if you can take L Lysien in small doses.. But you must ask your doctor. I speeds up mouth ulcer reovery by half.all in all its miserable..and my bloods went up even though I lost like 3 kilo's in a month from low carbing and I mean extreme.. Because I needed to get bloods a bit lower. Now I am on very low carb most days and I have a cold and sore throat...but getting better fast this time..

Eat very healthy food. Raw soups are very god for giving you a boost. Here's wishing you well. I think many diabetics have had this experience.

Your own body makes antibodies to fight viral infections ( that is why you are never prescribed antibiotics for cold and flu etc as they don't work). The downside is that they are made of sugar and as such push your blood glucose level high, even though you may be eating a lot less than normal. Just inject a little extra insulin and check your glucose levels regularly. Never stop injecting ( type 1) if you are unwell even if you stop eating altogether.

P.S. just realised that you are not on insulin so not a great deal of help to you, sorry.
