Visual field tests and driving license

Hi everyone, is there anyone that can help/advise? 20 years ago , as a result of pre eclampsia, my eyes were damaged and I underwent masses of laser treatment, being diabetic was not the issue and I have not had any problems since. Since then any eye appointment/treatment even an ordinary eye test fills me with dread, especially the visual field Esterman/Goldman tests. As a result I have had my driving licence revoked. I wouldn't complain if I couldn't see but this is because I have a phobia with the test. My consultant isn't very helpful and I don't know who or where else to turn. This is surely discrimination as I wouldn't have to do this test if I wasn't diabetic!
Just to make it clear, I cannot do the tests as I am too stressed, the little lights are so similar to laser lights and I have a panic attack able s soon as they start, which results in failure as I am physically unable to press the button.

I read your posting with interest, and there is something that I do not really understand...how does being phobic about the tests affect your test results. Opticians and Consultants can only go by the results that are displayed from the tests, they cannot go by your telling them you can see ok....The test results are what the DVLA will be interested in. So, how do you think that your phobia affects your results?

Have you spoken to an optician, I'm sure they will have encountered people phobic about eye tests etc before, they might be able to suggest something to help you deal with the test, eg maybe carrying out one as a practice to help you get used to it?

Hi Elaine and welcome to the forum, whilst I have sympathy for you The DVLA can only go by the test results or everyone would be claiming a test phobia.

You may find it useful to practice the test in the quiet comfort of your own home and by relaxing and trying it again and again you may desensitise yourself to this phobia.

Here is a link to an on line Visual Field Test you can practice with VISUAL FIELD TEST Just click the link and follow the on line instructions.

Hope this helps
