Does anyone get tested for these vitamins as part of their diabetes review? Last year I was tested for vitamin D (I didn't request this, my GP just did it) and I was found to have a vitamin D deficiency so was prescribed 3 months of supplements. I now take supplements during the winter months (about 3 months) just as a precaution. Am not so sure what to do about the B vitamins as I've seen posts on here mentioning some take them and some have had deficiencies. What do others recommend to do?

I insisted on a vit B12 last week as metformin can inhibit the uptake of B12. I have long concluded that this is my condition and my problem, and view the surgery as part professional service and part sub-contractor

I had never been tested for Vit D or the B vitamins. I don't take Metformin (can eat up B12) and have never had any deficiency symptoms, so that is possibly the reason.

For my last test I was curious about my vitamin levels after reading so many folk on here take supplements. I asked if VitD, B12, and folate could be added to my normal tests. My GP signed the blood forms with these added, plus iron and ferritin. Everything came back normal. So I don't need supplements.

I have been tested for vitamin D deficiency for years ago and since then regulary, I did have a deficiency and am thankfull thaat my GP did find that out, and I allways take vitamin D all the year around , when not being in a very sunny site of this World...

I have also been tested for other kinds of deficiencies like potassium and sodium levels which have both been too low at times like lower than the lowest in the scale...

my vitamin b 12 is also normal till now

Potassium and sodium are included in the renal checks we get as part of our diabetes review, or at least they are in mine.

While I was pregnant (over 5 years ago) I was checked and confirmed my Vit D and B was low (almost 0), GP argued over giving me a high dose of vit D, insisting I should just buy it over the counter. Since then they are always reluctant to check my Vit D levels and then do anything about it when I insist and results come back low!

Sometimes GP's just drive you crazy! My sister had a Vit D deficiency and her doctor was the same - told her to buy it over the counter - what they don't get is that it is cheaper for them to prescribe it - and if you buy the stuff yourself (the high potency stuff) it's expensive. You can see where this is going??? They don't like anything which might impact on their budget! They never did figure out why her Vit D levels were so low.
