Vitamin D

My last blood test was 25 for vitamin D. Apparently, it should be between 25-50. I was going to take a Vit d supplement but a friend told me not to take it unless I incorporate K2. Not sure what this is. Thanks.

I don't know of any definitive medical evidence, but it is thought that Vitamin K2 helps direct the calcium absorbed by Vitamin D to the bones rather than to blood and soft tissue.
However, there is this Meta-Analysis of Randomised Control Trials in PubMed:

My last vitamin D test was extremely low in single figures, I was prescribed prescription strength Vitamin D3 & K2 for 3 months then was told by GP to drop down to over the counter strength & buy my own (which I’m happy to do) You need the K2, especially on a prescription strength to prevent the calcium build up in your arteries (so my GP informed me) I get the vitamin D3 & K2 from Holland & Barrat - look out for their 3 for 2 deals.

Did you get any advice from Dr or other HCP following the blood test, @AnnM99 ?
Are you on any other medications or supplements?
What sort of diabetes do you have?
Sorry for the questions, but it helps if this info is in your profile, so that members can give appropriate , targeted advice.

I've been on Vitamin D tablets since I was around 15, my epilepsy tablets as my neurologist described it at the time like to suck up my Vitamin D. I was never told back then to take K2 alongisde it and never have done

Hiya,
I have type 2. Recent hba21 was 47. Lowest I have got it to was 40 from 86.
I take 1 x 500 metformin a day. No other supplements or meds. I do have elevated B12 so must not add any more B12 into diet. I also have elevated ferritin and have recently given blood to hopefully help this. I am 52 with a BMI of 23.
Feeling more lethargic since I stopped my D3 3 weeks ago - when a friend who is a biologist said it should be taken with K2 but could not tell me dose etc.

Thank you. Really helpful.

Perhaps because of your other concerns around the B12 & Ferritin you are best speaking to your HCP or possibly a pharmacist before adding any supplements to your regime, as you are on the 25 for vit D you may not need it as you are technically in the range. In your position I would take medical advice first

Thank you for this. I am looking on geeks website.

If you are starting to feel lethargic on vitamin D you could very well be overdosing.

That’s interesting @Tazdevl,

I know you can overdose on Vitamin D because when I was on the prescription strength for the 3 months I had to have monthly blood tests to keep a check on my levels. Do you have a link to this information?

I’m always concerned that people take over the counter supplements without checking with either a HCP or pharmacist if they need them or checking if there are any contraindications with other meds/supplements.

Just because something is available over the counter doesn’t mean it is safe or harmless for everyone

Think I have saved something scientific about it in a folder on my PC at home. This is close but not quite what I'm looking for: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/vitamin-d-side-effects#signs-and-symptoms

For me personally, I take the recommended Vitamin D dose because it improves my mental state. When I started to take way more than the recommended amount (I wasn't feeling that great mentally) things didn't improve but got worse. Feeling lethargic was one of them. I agree over the counter is never 100% safe or harmless.

Thanks for the link @Tazdevl - it’s has some good info. I’m still on the recommended dose too, I’m on blood tests every 6 months now as mine was so low, next test due in the autumn

I take vit D through the winter, generally 4,000IU/day. I don't se any "improvements" but I do notice I don't usually get sniffles or anything worse. 4000IU is two tablets.

The 130,000IU quoted in the healthline link would mean taking 65 tablets....daily.....there's only 50 tablets on each pill sheet.
