Hi All,

I have been eating quite a lot of cauliflower replacing potatoes as on a low Carb diet. This evening after eating cauliflower I started to feel a little sick...I looked up to see if this can happen if eating too much of it. Apparently, cauliflower has quite a high dose of Vitamin K as along with other vegs such as Greens, kale etc. It was advised that if people are on blood thinning meds, not to eat to much of it,as it can affect the workings of the medication. I take Asprin, for my heart, and wondered if anybody else had concerns with this, and people also on Warfarin? Here is a list of veg with Vitamin K

Zuc I think that people who especially on Warfarin should watch their intake. Not sure about Asprin users but will research it.

I only know that it can be (ie. potentially) harmful to kidney dialysis patients...and that it can thin the blood so that maybe it might make the effect of thinning agents more powerful and so make natural clotting of the blood more difficult. That said, it is supposedly very helpful in preventing heart disease and is very important for strengthening bone. I think the important thing is to eat it in moderation or at least not to have it all the time if you are on drugs like warfarin...and to avoid it more seriously if on dialysis. I would, however, ask your own doctor for an opinion in direct relation to your own individual circumstances.

Also worth noting that there are 3 forms of Vit K.

It is K1 that works on blood clotting.
I think K2 is usually low in the majority of the Western population, and would be very near impossible to have to excess. And it is K2 that is very useful to help protect the heart and with the efficient use of Vitamin D, either from sunlight or from food with the knock on effect of protecting from osteoporosis.

In my (limited) experience, doctors tend not to know that there is more than one version of K.

This is what the NHS has to say about it.

It seems that rather than thinning the blood, it helps it to clot. If this is the case, it could stop blood thinning medicines from doing their job.
Not picking on you but that doesn't sound right ( I didn't read the link)
People on blood thinners aren't supposed to eat foods high in K as it will thin their blood too much. And when prone to heart attacks or strokes, the very reason they're put on thinners, is to stop them from clotting and throwing an embolism which would cause them a heart attack or stroke.

Don't take my word as gospel, this is just what I learned as an emergency medical tech. But I do have to say the ambulance was never called for an overdose of K HAHA.

I'm not picking on you, either :) but Vit K helps to clot the blood, so there is little point in taking something that thins the blood and something that clots it. This is why there is a contraindication. Too much Vit K will stop the thinners from working as it works against them.

Tons about it on Doctor Google!

That makes sense as well. Just not what I learned.

HA! You know I had to do a little research. YOU WIN SMARTY!!!

good info to know.

Hmm think cauliflower has moderate vitamin K in,but think that people on blood thinners sh

Thank you all for your replies. I may ask my doctor as there seem's to be Vitamin K in quite a lot of veg,and the low carb diet calls for eating mainly veg, and quite a lot of it. I am not on Warfarin but Asprin. I would not be concerned ordinarily but this diet as I say causes for a lot of veg with vitamin K in.

To be honest I also take aspirin for similar reasons and I have eaten at one time or another just about every item on your list my doctor at no time has mentioned any problem with foods containing Vitamin K,

I stand corrected...well, I'm sitting down actually...evidently vitamin K doesn't thin or thicken blood but can work against blood thinning meds used to prevent clotting.

Personally, I avoid all fruit/veg as I don't think they are good for one's health.
Seriously. Beyond avocado ( I know you dont eat it ) I could argue your point as well. I love veggies but I don't feel well on them.
Oops, I need a few nuts too. Just protein and I'm starving.
