Waking up at night

JaneB46

Newbie
Hi there, I have not been diagnosed with diabetes but think that I have a blood sugar problem. I wake up every night at around 2am about (3.5hrs after my last food or drink) and feel the need to eat something. I def eat enough in the day and my sleep hygiene is very good. It causes me alot of anxiety because I really need to sleep. Could this be blood sugar related? How can I remedy this?

Thanks so so much

Janex

Hi, welcome to the forum. Are you type 1 or type 2?
If type 1 and you are injecting for the meal, maybe you have administered too much insulin, in this case lower your meal time insulin. Fast acting insulin can last up to 5 hours so at 3.5 hours this could be the cause.

Also when you are awake have you checked your BS levels? as this would give a much better idea if it is blood sugar related or just general irritable sleep.

JaneB46 said she was not diagnosed as diabetic
Ah my bad, read it as I have been diagnosed. Apologies.

I doubt its low blood sugar related in that case, could still be a case of high levels (hyperglycemia), it would be best to get a monitor and check levels, or see a doctor who can do some tests (hba1c etc)

It could be blood sugar related (high or low), it could be anxiety, it could be something else altogether. Two options here
1) go see your doctor and ask for suggestions
2) buy a blood glucose meter and test at night
I'd probably go for number 1 unless you've got some additional reasons to suspect a blood glucose disorder. There are too many possibilities for a non doctor to diagnose, or even suggest, a solution. If the doctor is no help and you still think it's blood sugar related you could go for option 2. Good luck.
