Was I right to get annoyed.....

My daughter who is 8 came home from school yesterday telling me that another boy also a type 1 diabetic had to use her finger pricker as the cap from his was missing! She has a multi clix device and was smart enough to twist the end and change the needle when the other boy used it and again when he gave it back. She said that she had offered him the device and the teacher had said that's ok!

Of course I was annoyed to find out this had happened and this morning I went into the school to inform them that this should never happen again. I didn't want to go in 'all guns blazing' as they have been very hands on and co-operative in dealing with my daughter. But, I'm still annoyed now as I feel that this is a 'common sense ' issue and should never of happened.
 
Absolutely yes you should be annoyed! Although you can move the lancet barrel onto a new needle it clearly says in the manual (page 5 of the pdf file) that it should never be used by more than one person to avoid the possibility of contamination, quoted from the manual:

"The Accu-Chek Multiclix Finger Pricker is intended for patient self-monitoring by an
individual person only. It must not be used to collect blood in a multi-patient setting
as it does not incorporate any features to guard against cross-infection."

It's common sense to those of us who are Diabetic not to share needles/lancet's/equipment etc but it may not have been seen as a problem by the Teacher.

I don't think we can expect everybody to know it is not recommended, even though some people do use the lancing device for more than one person. Those that do should always change the lancet and wipe the device between uses. I wouldn't advise multi person use though.

I am sure you educated the School/Teacher etc that it is not OK ! Sharing just shouldn't happen. Fortunately your daughter had the sense to change the lancet between uses, a sensible girl..... :)
 
I totally agree that lancet devices should only be used by one person, however I think that your daughter did the right and sensible thing in offering him the use of hers. After all, if it was the other way round and your daughters cap had gone astray (for whatever reason) would you not have been gratefull to the other child for offering the use of his finger pricker untill the cap was found.
Kids being what they are this sort of thing can happen to any of them. We don't know why the cap was missing but lets hope it was a one off.
I think you have a very caring and sensible daughter there.

Personally I'd rather have the school phone me so that I can provide a new lancing device rather than my daughter use someone else's. For me it would never be okay for my daughter to use a finger pricker that is used by someone else.

Cugila, I noticed you edited my post above for copyright, what did I post that needed changing - just so that I don't make the same error again. :)
 
I do wish they had of called as I could of taken a spare cap up there and when I mentioned this to be the boy's father he said that they had a spare meter and finger pricker at the school anyway!

My daughter is very caring in that way and did realise that she shouldn't share needles, hence her turning the barrel. I guess in someways I am glad she offered, I just wished the staff had realised this was not the correct thing to do.

No problem Sophia, if anything is quoted from somewhere Forum Policy is that anything covered by Copyright has to be posted using a 'quote' box as you will see it now does. Hence the edit.

If you had a link to a document that should also be posted. We recently had to come to an agreement with a Copyright owner after the person spotted her Copyright had been infringed here. She was happy with the way we dealt with it. It may seem harsh but if not done right it can cause us trouble.
