Hi All,

Going to my nieces wedding in April.

First challenge of this type. If it was a normal sit down meal, wouldn't imagine it would be a problem but it's an 'afternoon tea' - Sandwiches and cakes.

My inital thought was to forget I'm diabetic for 1 day and enjoy. As it's getting nearer I'm thinking I don't want to eat these things BUT I don't want to ask for a 'special meal' or stand out as different. I suppose I could take a salad with me but again i don't want to have to be different

I'm also a bit worried if I do just eat what's there I will get a taste again for bread ( I have broken the back of my bread addiction)

Thoughts welcome.

thanks x

Hi Mary, whilst one sandwich probably wont kill you so either try to go for a wholegrain option if there is one or just take a couple of sarnies and eat the filling. Do you know if there will be any other buffet type foods there at all, some fruit perhaps, three or four grapes a strawberry and a couple of pieces of pineapple would be nice and do little to your bg levels.

I attended a Diabetes UK Event yesterday and lunch was sandwiches, sausage rolls fresh fruit - laid on by the venue not DUK I would like to say - I had taken a sandwich with me that I know is OK for my levels and an apple which I took home again as I ate some fruit, the exact portion I mentioned above, had I not taken a sandwich I could simply have had half a wholemeal sandwich as was available. If you are going to be dancing, quite common at weddings  then you will be able to burn off a sandwich in no time - Boogie on

I'm sure your niece won't mind requesting a meal suitable for your enjoyment, most catering establishments are more than happy to oblige where customers have a particular dietary need.

All the caterers need to do is put those sandwich fillings on a plate and make you a tasty salad.

So, update from the wedding,

Gorgeous weekend. Only fell off the low-carb wagon for 1 day - the day of the wedding.

Afternoon tea, couple of sandwiches and a scone - slathered in butter to counter-act the carbs :P

Buffet at night - chicken thighs, couple of little sausages, couple of samosas, couple mini spring rolls, lots of wine, dancing then 2 pints of water. Reading before bed 6.4 (only reading taken the whole weekend more out of curiosity than usefulness)

Re worries I would want bread and 'tings' again - unfounded. Totally minging. Ate because I had to have something - glad to return to my 'normal' diet. :D :D :D :D

That is good news Mary. All the wine and dancing will have evened things out I bet

At events where I don't have control over what food is offereed, i often just eat the sandwich fillings. Within the family, no-one even wonders what I am doing any more.

You and me both. People were looking in horror at me last time I flew to the US, eating the insides of a BA sandwich with my fingers.

last time i had a BA sandwich it had very little filling!

The Sandwiches in First Class are very nice darlings...

Hey I remember you! You were that gay San Franciscan hairdresser I sat next to weren't you?

Never used to have time for sandwiches on Concorde.....

Sandwiches in a pet crate... you're having us on Grazer surely?

Do my eyes deceive me look upwards, Sid has morphed!

The young Terry Thomas I rather liked when I saw it elsewhere and thought it would make a nice change and usher in the new Sid :D

The dancer was just to illustrate the wedding night festivities, sort of like
