Hi any tips on how to control blood sugars when going to a wedding. As I have one in June, July, August.

Find out in advance when the food will be, and, if possible, get an idea of what will be available so you can think about boluses, etc.

Test lots, keep glucose tablets with you, and if possible a small snack as I've found things often run a bit late.

If you're on a basal/bolus insulin regime as said keep testing, have fast acting carbs at hand and you're insulin - carb counting will invariably be difficult to impossible along with timing of injections/food. Give yourself some lee way with BG levels, a couple of days of higher than normal levels won't mean the end of the world but be comfortable that your correction dosage ratio is correct. Other than that have a good time - but a 3 month wedding sounds really really long!

As for a T2, weddings are a mine field to navigate food wise!

I can see the menu that it being planned, but it's difficult to assess how many carbs will be in it until I see the plate in front of me. I'm new to the basal/bolus regime (I only started this week) , so I suppose I will be more familiar by the time October comes round. I can see timings might be an issue, depending on how long photos and things take! I'm also thinking about alcohol, I can avoid it for most of the day with out problem, but I think I should partake in the toast and a reception drink. Is this something I need to worry about when working out how much to inject?

Thanks
Jo

For sure you'll be more adapt at carb counting come October, the timing of food shouldn't be an issue as a basal/bolus insulin regime allows you to eat when you want, but if your bg levels do tend to dip between meals then a glucotab or two will keep your levels up.

As for alcohol just keep it in moderation, what you could do before the big day is to try out drinking a few alcoholic drinks that will be on offer at the wedding, that way you are doing it in the safety of your own home and can monitor the effects it has on your bg levels in preparation for your daughters wedding day.

Try not to stress and just enjoy the day @Cragwood @dex44lego9

Jo - your info says you're just on levemir guess you haven't updated your profile since last week! ;)

Alcohol is a funny thing, it stops the liver doing anything apart from dealing with the alcohol so it won't react if your BG level goes very low.

Some people find spirits with diet mixers have a reducing effect (a G+T does me), sweet wines will raise, dry wines will keep things fairly level, beer tend to raise BG especially lager beer, but we're all different. Maybe you need to do some fact finding trials before hand  (I now have an image of you testing at the bar and ordering a 2 G+Ts because you're a bit too high, and then going back for a pint of Stella because you've gone to low, and spending the rest of the evening mixing your drinks!)

By October you'll have a handle on things more and I'm sure you won't have an issue - just enjoy it.

I like the picture you're painting of some fact finding trials :D Could be interesting......

I have the hen night to navigate too! I might just have to be the old sensible one minding everyone's handbags!!

Out of interest how do I put the footer onto my posts that most people have on here. I will update my profile.

Thanks again
Jo

it's your 'signature' in your profile. have a blast on the hen night, you can always put any untoward mischief down to having a hypo!

Hi dex44lego9, when I had the honour of giving my daughter away I knew that the stress and excitement of the wedding would play havoc with my sugars but had no way of knowing to what extent. My approach to diabetes is I'm controlling it, it lives by my rules and never takes precedence over anything, I have total respect for my diabetes but it has to fit into my lifestyle. Back to the day of the wedding I had no intention of doing blood sugar test an hour before or during the ceremony, I had no intention of going hypo at all that day so for a 4hr period I ran my sugars high(around 10/11) with some complex carbs. The trade off of having high sugar was a carefree wedding ceremony with the most important people in my life. Didn't have to correct at reception as excitement had bought me down to 7.

Hi dex44lego9 I hope the first wedding went well! I married my beautiful wife this past Thursday (I think the nerves of having to request lucozade at the alter was overcoming my normal nerves lol) so I ran my bloods a little higher than usual too around 9ish. Made sure I checked them quickly before the ceremony then before the 2 meals. Brilliant day and not sure what I was so worried about with diabetes concerns...although I think I got a little too enthusiastic on the wedding cake
