I am trying to decide if my exercise class on Wednesday evenings is causing higher bedtime levels. They are not really high usually between 6.5 and 7.0 two hours after dinner, so not worried as they are under 7.8. Just curious.

I go to a 45 minute dance class, quite high intensity, from 7.00 - 7.45 by the time I get home and shower it is usually 8.30 before I eat. Tonight I had the left overs from last nights dinner, stuffed aubergines and salad, 2 hours after dinner last night my BG was 5.8 tonight It was 6.5. It led me to checking my Wednesday after dinner readings and they are all mid to high 6's. I thought exercise was supposed to reduce glucose levels, Thursday morning fasting levels are between 6 -6.5. Do you think these higher readings are because of the dance class? And if so does anyone know why?

Hi Donnadoobie,

Yes, it can happen. I read that, when you exercise and there is not enough glucose for the muscles in your blood, the liver can inject some more and therefore increase the levels. Some suggest to eat a small bit of carbs before sports, e.g. 1-2 tablespoons of something starchy.

What's happened is perfectly normal, just your liver preparing you with more glucose, if you went on for longer, it's job is to do that, only if it excessive, would you want to take precautions.
You don't have to have carbs before, as this will spike your blood glucose levels before, you don't to feel a bit rough while you are exercising?
Your readings are fine and to be expected!
The benefits of exercise as you are taking part in is long term not short term!
A short rise like yours is nothing to worry about.

If you want to lower your bloods within an hour, if you feel a bit rough is to go for a gentle walk. It helps lower them gradually and walking is good for you!

Hope this helps!

Thanks
I will do some experimenting. I suppose if BG is slightly raised when I eat, it is going to be a bit higher later.

I know exercise is beneficial so all is worth it. Will persevere.

Hi Donnadoobie,

By the way, I do not usually do this myself, only sometimes, e.g. when my BG is quite low and I plan to do really strenuous or lengthy exercise.
