Magpies :

One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told.

If you see one magpie you have to hold your collar until you see a four legged animal.

As a kid I used to call them 'dicky birds'. I don't know why :?

That brings back some lovely memories :) I wish I could go back there.....

Wood Pigeons .

They sit in the trees behind us coo'ing away .

Thanks for this one Izzzi
Me and my 4year old grandaughter often sing this one together .
She likes doing the hand movements to the rhymme .
Her face lights up when we do it together .

Love the sound of wood pigeons. I have seen some pigeons in the garden though but not heard them. The other day I saw a jay in the garden for the first time. Very handsome birds.

I have a pair of wood pigeons who regularly visit my little garden. One sits on the fence keeping dixie while the other feeds, then they change places. They're very dignified birds and also they're very considerate of the smaller birds around them. They don't scare off the little ones at all and they don't hog all the food.

Starlings, dozens of them, in our walnut tree.

Well, it's not summer yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing the swallows flying round and round in our garden at the end of the day when summer arrives.

I want a walnut tree. Give me a walnut tree.

Only seen 'one' - song thrush .
Still too early I reckon .

I also love the common sparrow. We have got lots in the garden and I have often seen them mating (too much information?). There is a couple who nest under the roof tiles of our garage and are here every year. They are safe from the cats although they get up on the roof and stick their paws through the hole in the tiles. The little couple are already here now.

Owls sit in the huge oak tree behind our garage at night .
Twooting away in the stillness of the night .

Once one flew in out of the torrential rain and sheltered on the garage rafters .
It was gorgeous with real 'amber' eyes ...
We left it to quietly shelter there .

Anna.

When the weather is bad over Lake Geneva, the seagulls come up to us. Also when a farmer ploughs his field, they follow the tractor looking for the worms he digs up. Lovely seeing them flying all around the back of the plough. Then the field is full of them searching for the worms that have been brought to the surface.
