I was diagnosed 13 years ago and by loosing several stone I have managed my condition with diet and exercise however following a number of personal issues in recent years I have been depressed. This was put down to the diabetes and I was prescribed metformin? Since starting the treatment I have gained more than half a stone and feel so tired I struggle to maintain my usual 3-4 hours per week at the gym. Does anyone know of any direct connection between metformin and weight gain. I have taken the drug for short periods over the past 13 years and on each occasion I have had the same problem?

Hi. It's unusual for Metformin to cause weight gain but we are all different. Metformin wouldn't help with depression and if just diet was working for in controlling blood sugar and weight then you might want to discuss with the GP the purpose of it for you. Perhaps your blood sugar was a bit high and the GP was trying to help with that and hence any depression from having diabetes? There are various charities that can help with depression including Mind who I work with.
