I do not have diabetes
How come one of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes is weight loss, but I have been gaining weight just before being diagnosed. I have had diabetes symptoms for two years but only just been diagnosed due to an error at my surgery?

From fairly extensive reading of people's stories here on the forum I would say that weight loss is rarely a symptom of Type 2.
It is far more usual to see it as a precursor to a Type 1 diagnosis. or am I wrong?

Thank you for your reply. I thought the same as you after reading many articles. My doctor not only failed to look at my Hba1c and listen to my symptoms at the time but said well you hadn't had any weight loss?? Now taking metformin SR 500 three a day. Also on LCHF diet

Time for a new doctor? Hopefully you will find your new way of eating as helpful as I have in keeping blood sugar under control. What as your HbA1c result?

Because I was not overweight but had a high HbA1c at diagnosis I was quizzed extensively about weight loss at my first consult with my Diabetes Specialist Nurse. I did not have any weight loss, sudden or otherwise, and was diagnosed as Type 2.

There are cases of misdiagnosis especially regarding LADA or even T1 if the person is in an early 'honeymoon' period but these misdiagnoses are not common at all. Weight gain is a very common symptom (but never a cause) of Type 2 Diabetes.

You are right. A 'T2' who has lost weight around diagnosis is quite likely to be a mis-diagnosed T1.

How is your bgs now?
As if you were type1 and diagnosed in error metformin just helps use less insulin injected units. You would still be in 20s mostly without insulin. 30s without insulin and without metformin.
Sounds like you are a type2 but as others have suggested, get a second opinion from a doctor as we cannot diagnose on here.

I weighed less before I was diagnosed but that just ment I was running on higher bgs and close to acidosis. Type2s can also suffer with acidosis, not just type1s. I lost more on metformin before I was diagnosed. I was using metformin for pcos not diabetes. Only once I stopped pcos treatment for ivf did I get a diabetes diagnosis.

Not only was I putting on loads of weight before diagnosis, after my blood glucose had been down to normal for a while my weight started dropping - on the same menu too. I do a lot more activities now, and even more housework, but it never worked in the past when combined with high carb regimes.

So it seems, once again we type2s are all different. But some type2s will be misdiagnosed. Statistics prove that.

I'm afraid mis-diagnosis is very common; see recent news articles in the media and many posts to these forums. I was one of those and it results in the wrong treatment and risks DKA.

I suppose it's down to the difference between confirmed diagnosis of hundreds of thousands of T2s and the numbers of misdiagnoses made re T1.

Hi i just wasn't informed of my blood result in Jan 2016 as the Dr looked at my fasting blood but not my Hba1c and told me bloods were fine. Only to be told last month after I booked in for a routine heart failure screening program and had more bloods taken that I was type 2 Dm. Apologies for the error was given but that doesn't help me much.
