So this week I have had my DVLA eyesight exam (which I am sure I will fail) and emergency surgery to remove a perrianal abscess.

I am laid up now with the prospect of further operations as I have a fistula and just feeling generally fed up. I have less then 2 weeks to recover in time for my hols.

By that time I am also unlikely to drive if my eye test result goes as I fear. Sometimes having this condition is just ****

Sorry to hear that @Hattonma try not to worry about the eye exam, who knows what the result will be. I know it's hard but stay positive, focus on healing and not stressing, take care of yourself.

Hi there, no wonder you are feeling fed up! Just a small thing I noticed though, you say you are sure you will 'fail' as if you have done something wrong or not worked hard enough! I see the word 'fail' quite often in this forum when people are talking about their glucose levels and hb1a tests and so on. Please don't think of any results as a pass or fail, that is a surefire way to become depressed. I do hope you're feeling better soon.

Thanks both. Must admit never had pain like that before. On the plus side I have a week off work to do as little as possible.

I am just frustrated with the eye test as I don't believe it is a fair test. I have full 20/20 vision but that isn't considered. Not much I can do though so I am not stressing just feeling glum

Hi @Hattonma, You are in the trenches bombarded and wounded.
First, can you possible convert holidays to sick leave if necessary and also use the sick certificate to cancel and be re-imbursed for any holiday arrangements ? When in hospital for other reasons I recall a patient with what sounded like your condition being advised by the nurses to use salt baths. Not sure if that applies to you, but here in Australia, sitting in the middle of a salt pan as far as the eye can see with a a watering can does not sound like fun!
I am not familiar with the DVLA eye test. I presume you see an eye specialist ? yearly ? two yearly? as part of diabetes care so maybe he/she can explain why your measured 20/20 (or ? 6/6) vision is not sufficient for you to drive, could he/she provide you with a certificate that renders you fit to drive from the eyesight perspective. And is there any visual aid like spectacles which could help ?? Or is it another test like about peripheral vision that is the issue?
Best Wishes on your recovery and with the driving !!

Thanks it is gratefully received
You won't be able to swim in a public pool if you are going away for your holiday and the wound will need to be packed and redressed every few days? Is the eye test the retinal screening (retinal photo) that is worrying you?
