Woke up this morning and took a reading - 6.4 (had been out the night before and had two small glasses of red wine and a 1/2 oz jell-o shooter (might be a Canadian phenomenon don't know if you have these in the UK). Came home and had a piece of toast before going to bed (bg was 9.1) to ensure I didn't drop overnight as I have read elsewhere on the forums that this is something to watch out for. Had a breakfast of two poached eggs and two slices of wholewheat toast and took by level 2 hours later and it was 12.1. After such a small meal this seems awfully high to me. Is this a normal level given my activity over the past 12 hours?

Bread would up your levels as very carby usually but you need to test before a meal AND after to know by how much. Did you check your level on waking or immediately before your breakfast ?

woke up and it was 6.4, had breakfast within about 15 minutes, so didn't test again until 2 hours after when it was 12.1

Oh dear.....I think you are definitely going to have to cut down on the bread, maybe try one slice next time. I can manage a slice of bread/toast but not 2 ....... :(

In my case, it would definitely be the bread! Especially when first diagnosed, I couldn't eat 1 slice without hitting the '10's'. :( You can experiment by repeating the breakfast and testing, or try 1 slice and see what happens...or just the eggs.

Darn - and I even went to a bakery that bakes bread with stoneground flour, uses no sugar or preservatives

Thanks for the advice

Sadly bread will definately raise your level it does with me and tbh it's the hardest thing to go without for me, same goes for cereal, had a really small bowl and my levels spike to 14 :O.

There is a recipie floating about for a flax meal foccacia, I did make one and it was perfectly edible out of the over but sadly when cold I found it absolutely vile, tempted to try this:

lowcarbmegastore

not sure if anyone has tried it but it has to be better than the foccacia

Ceecee. I found that when I was first diagnosed, I couldn't eat bread at all without spiking. 8 months later (and quite a few pounds lighter), I can now manage a slice occasionally. Don't know where you are with your bg and control but it may make a difference.

Thanks to everyone. Still very new at all this so I guess some of it is just wishful thinking that simply reducing the quantity of what I was eating will be enough - cutting out certain foods entirely may be necessary, at least for now until I get my weight under control.

Just got the results back from my very first hbA1C - 7.4 - is this good? Would metformin be indicated at this level? Had a friend in the lab give me the results so I haven't heard from my GP yet.

Hi CeeCee

I can't say whether 7.4 is good or not but that is exactly what my first HbA1c reading was in October 2010. My GP wanted to put me on medication saying that at that level I had probably been diabetic for a while. Well, I managed to pursuade her to let me try diet only for 3 months. With the advice gained from this amazing forum I have adjusted what I eat, tested very regularly and managed to lose over a stone in weight. Oh, nearly forgot, also brought my HbA1c down to 6.7 in just 12 weeks. It really depends on how you feel about medication or how you are able to change your diet and do it the diet only way. This is a very supportive group so whatever the outcome you have come to the right place!
