what can i drink and eat

Stick to water whilst cycling. Drunk in charge of a bike will cost you your driving licence and get you a ban even before you have passed your test.

Nice bit of research. Unfortunately there are not too many real ales in the list which is what OP says he likes to drink. The list seems a bit full of lager. It would be very interesting to extend the list to include the real ales. I am pretty sure that Shepherd and Neame Sptfire and the like won't be low carb.
 
According to the Hamlyn GI GL counter book, ales on average are as below

Bitter, best or premium, pale ales etc. 12-14g
Barley wines 36g

Typically unless its a sweet beer like barley wine, the stronger it is the less it has in the way of carbs.

Of course, the alcohol content usually suppresses the release of glucose from the liver into the blood stream which may explain why I don't spike on beer, the ones I drink are usually between 3.8 and 5% abv, but there is one particular porter which appears very occassionally on the pumps that i like which is 6.5, and that has very little effect on my BG. A slice of toast or 40g of porridge on the other hand causes mayhem.

It would be very interesting to extend the list to include the real ales.

I had a look for Timothy Taylor's Landlord, Ruddles County and Black Sheep Brewery's Riggwelter and it is always the same story, 'unknown amount of carbs'.

I would imagine that there is quite a range of values for ales as they are all brewed to give distinctive tastes.

Fortunately I also like Belgian beers like Chimay and other Trapisten beers. They seem to have around 19g of carbs per bottle

Jack I had to give my allotment up when I was going through cancer treatment I do like veg but could not be a veggi as I enjoy meat as well I will turn part of the garden into a veg patch
I too eat meat mainly chicken and fish but lean red meat is alright on occasion. Best of luck with the veg. plot and I am sorry that you lost your allotment.
 
I enjoy my beer I do though avoid keg beers and draught lagers for some reason unlike a real ale they have a big impact on my BG, of course your mileage may vary only way to find out is to test.

Not a good idea to have a takeaway pizza on the way home though:woot:

Could it be that the fizzy nature of the keg drinks causes them to be passed into the gut, where the sugar is absorbed, more quickly?
There is more to this diabetes than I first thought.
 
hello all

I could do with some advice

I like real ale am I allowed to drink it on a night out not that I go out very often once a month,
I have taken up mountain biking and normally would put water in my drinks bottle is there anything else I could put in it,

any help would be very gratefully received
I like beer and whilst it does have sugar in it, raising your bg it also has alcohol which lowers it! Try an LCL type of beer and keep away from the really sweets ones. I just recently got back from holiday and found a pils type beer that had absolutely no effect up or down on my levels..heaven!

Beer does raise your sugars while you are drinking it and who among us only has the one pint when in a pub. The alcohol lowers your blood sugar during the hangover period. Mayoclinic list low blood sugar as one of the symptoms of a hangover. An important point to remember for those who inject.
 
Be aware though that the low BG's may be the only symptom you get, I don't suffer from hangovers but my BG's do go down, although never below 4.

Like the OP I love real ale. On Metformin but cannot take it on Fridays or an any other day when I am having more than a couple of pints. Metformin seems not to like real ale and many will be aware of its explosive qualities. Realise that all beer has substantial calories but my weight is now better than it has been since diagnosis (September 2009) due to substantial cycling exercise though I am still overweight. Good to know that the stronger beers have less calories as they also have more flavour. Love the Workie Ticket, but normally prefer the bitter brews.

Always seemed odd, particularly before I was on metformin, Friday nights/Saturday mornings were the only time I was not thirsty. I now understand this is because blood sugars are lowered the next day.

My diabetic nurse considers that my diabetes is well managed (was 6.1 last time) so for me a few pints of real ale don't seem to cause any harm. I realise that this is not the case for all diabetics, particularly those on insulin or other medication.
