What did you eat yesterday on your Low carb Diet?

Hi sharon! Here's a copy of what I posted on your other thread:-

"So, for brekky I had some bite-size shredded wheat - I can handle carbs in the morning quite well. Shredded wheat have same carbs as a lot of other cereals, but almost zero sugar compared to most. I had them with 1% fat milk, and had 2 cups coffee.
lunch was a sarnie made with low GI burgen soya and linseed bread (sainsburys and tescos). As well as low GI, has less total carbs as slices smaller! Had fresh ham and mustard in them. Side salad of lettuce and cherry tomatos. Couple of chunks of cheese and silverskin pickled onions on the side.
Dinner was frozen white fish (buy it in big bags in sainsburys) with a bit of pesto, sliced tomato, onion and mushroom on top, wrapped in foil and baked in oven for 25 mins (baked from frozen), served with brocolli and 2 baby new potatos boiled.
In ther evening, I had some mixed salted and roasted nuts for a snack (not a big portion) and before bed I had a glass (small) of unsweetened alpro soya milk.
Total carbs for the day were about 130 that day.
"

You can see I don't go desperately low carb, that's about 45% of the guideline amount for a man, but it's fine for my blood sugars.
If you wanted to go lower, you could leave out the shredded wheat and have an omelette, or cold boiled egg (cooked night before for convenience?) with ham, etc. You could leave out the new pots, and replace with other veg or a salad. You could have one slice of bread (burgen) rather than my two. You'd be down to about 70 grams carbs then. I like to have a more moderate level of carbs that I can stick to for life though. Just suits me!

Hi Sharon, I dont consider myself a low carber although of course that rather depends on your interpretation of a low carb diet...A body building friend of mine (not diabetic) says that anything under 1g of carbs per lb of body weight is a low carb diet so for a male of 200lb's then anything under 200g of carbs would be considered low carb but a woman of 112lb's would need to eat less than 112g of carbs to be considered a low carber which when you think about it is probably true.

Most low carbers on here always talk about a particular amount of carbs being a low carb/medium carb/high carb diet but fail to take into consideration the body weight of the individual.

That said:

Breakfast 16g of Corn Flakes 11.5g carbs and a splash of semi skimmed milk carbs unknown.
Lunch Burgen bread sandwich with ham and mustard 21g carbs
Dinner Chicken curry with Mushroom bharji and basmati rice (two desert spoon fulls) carbs unknown but probably around 40g all up.

So adding in the bag of plain crisps I had after lunch (12.4g carbs) my total would have been around 85g of carbs :D About average give or take the odd snack.

And as I've said many times on here I dont need to cut out any foods from my diet I just eat smaller portions than I used to, in other words 85g of carbs without trying to low carb :D

I would advise eating to your meter and not to a fixed amount of carbs...But that is for another thread maybe...

What a great thread for ideas this could turn out to be for us newbies,

Yesterday I had, Grilled mushrooms and a tomato, with scrambled eggs for breakfast.

Lunch was a huge bowl of veg soup I made myself with leeks spring cabbage, a carrot, suede, and butternut squash, and blitzed in the blender with a dash of cream.

had a small handful of almonds and some berries for a snack as was eating later

Then for dinner had steak grilled, with a huge mixed salad and lots of black pepper, and a small sweet potato baked, ( im fine with these and handle them well)

didnt feel deprived at all lol

am eating better on vivs modified aktins than i ever had before

not exactly sure of the carbs as they only came from veg so think i was pretty low

Please if you read this then take a minute and post what you ate we newbies are really interested on how this all works
Sharon

I don't eat low carb, but I never eat pasta or rice and the only bread I eat is The Food Doctor pitta bread.

Yesterday I had:-

Breakfast at 6 am - porridge with skimmed milk.

Lunch at 12 noon - salad, tin of no-drain sunflower oil tuna + corncakes.

Tea at 5.30 pm - salad, butter beans, 2 x pitta breads

3 clementines + one apple eaten during the day.

Normally I eat the pitta breads at lunchtime and the corncakes at tea time, but I was working and the little packets of corncakes are easier to take to work than pitta breads.

As a newbie, I think this is a great idea for a thread. It gives us ideas of what to eat (but also causes me to drool while reading it )

I am finding it difficult to get back in control after Christmas (I know it's nearly February  )
and yesterday was my daughter's 19th birthday so we went out for a meal and I "forgot" for the night that I was diabetic. I, therefore, don't think it's a good idea to post what I ate yesterday-it's too shocking to admit  (BG level was 9.4 when I came home)

I have also noticed how strict everyone is and no one seems to have had any wee slip-ups during the day. I so wish that I could be as strong and as determined as everyone on here.

Today I have had 3 slices of birthday cake this morning ( no it's not a typing error-had to take cake to my mum's house so I wouldn't eat any more  ), maple and pecan breakfast cereal (aldi's), ham sandwich made with burgen bread, tin chicken soup, 6 wheat crackers with philly, a clemetine and, in the last hour, about 12 maltesers. My BG level is 6.2 (tested 10 mins ago). The thing is I am really in the mood for something nice to eat just now. Might have to go to bed to stop myself finishing the bag of maltesers.

Maybe posting on this thread will encourage me to eat more wisely rather than having to admit how bad I have been.

Hi
I am trying to stick to Dr Bernsteins low carb diet so yesterday I had a small portion of. Full fat Greek yogurt with 25 fresh blueberries and a black tea followed by a coffee with single cream.
I had a decaf soya latte out then for lunch I had a portion of prawns with mayo 3spears of pickled dill cucumber and one cherry tomato then a sugar free jelly with single cream. I didn't have many calories left (I am trying to lose weight) so had a couple of teaspoons of almond butter and more black tea.I ended up with a glass of Pellegrino water.

Coffee with cream and a spoonful of coconut oil
Streaky bacon, 1 tomato and 1 egg, all fried with a thin slice of cheese melted on top

Cold chicken with small salad, cherry tomatoes and full fat Mayo

3 quality sausages or chops etc.fried, with cauli and brocolli topped with a cheese sauce made of cream cheese, dash of cream, grated Cheddar and squirt of Mustard.

The fat stops me from feeling hungry so rarely have to snack, if I do it's usually nuts or a Babybel

This is a typical low carb day for me when I'm being good. I wouldn't want to confess to what I eat on a bad day  Believe me Choco I have slip ups too, we're not all strong and determined all the time

Jane :)

today i had:

no breakfast - lie in.

brunch - 2quorn fillets with chopped tomato + herb sauce, green beans. (13g carb).

snack: del monte pure orange juice ice lolly. (15g carb)

Hypo: lucozade (20g carb)

dinner: courgette "tagliatelle" (5g carb) with beanfeast (45g carb) dairy free "parmesan" (5g carb) and coleslaw (5g carb). With a 250ml glass of (dairy free milk alternative) coconut milk. (5g carb)

snack: Hot chocolate (8g carb) Dark Chocolate (2g carb)

Think that comes to a total of 123g carb - 103g carb of food and 20g carb hypo treatment

I made a pot of leek and chicken soup and made my way through that. I think there were also some nuts and a few cups of coffee with double cream.

The day before was two scrambled eggs with cream, a salad of goats cheese, baby leaves, dry fried onions and peppers, red onions and cress. There was bound to be a few cups of coffee with cream and more nuts.

You only had soup and a few nuts yesterday? And 2 scrambled eggs, few nuts and some salad the day before? Wow i think i would starve lol i think i eat too much!

I know. When it's written down, it doesn't seem like a lot but my appetite is just not what it was. But bear in mind it was a really good sized saucepan full and home made. There was probably 3/4 of a pre-cooked chicken in that pot and two big leeks.
The salad would have been a whole log of goats cheese, a large pepper and onion, half a bag of leaves and half a punnet of cress. When I have coffee, it's not a little splash of cream, it's a goodly slug.
The eggs are made with the same amount of cream and very substantial, especially as they are cooked in butter!

I've just woken up from my night shift. I had those eggs before I went to bed and I've just had a mug of coffee with cream and a knob of butter in it. I've not decided on what I want for my evening meal yet, but I've got some chicken breasts that I may foil bake in home made pesto or the Bratwurst that are less than 0.1g carb per sausage. Add to that some green beans, carrots and cauliflower rice and I'll be sorted. If I fancy something sweet later, I may have a mug of home made custard.

Life is good (and so are my Trigs)

Breakfast 2 slices Burgen toast with cheese ,handful of walnuts with cream 2 cups black tea with lemon
Lunch Bacon egg and mushrooms small clementine "
Evening meal Roast beef roasted celeriac and swede 1 small roast spud sprouts cauli broccoli gravy made with meat juices and a slug of red wine
a couple of glasses of red wine over the evening and a couple of squares of 85% choc.
I am a skinny type 2 so this is my usual type of diet but I keep my BGs under control with 2x1g SR metformin and have gained some weight and my cholesterol is ok without any meds for it.

Ok, here's what I managed today. Let me know if you think my estimates are wrong as I don't have my carb counting book yet.

Breakfast: 1 slice of Spelt bread Toast (15) and 2 x Wheatabix (26) = 41
During walk: 1 x slice Spelt bread and cheese (15)
Lunch: Poached Egg and Mushrooms on 2 x slices of Burgen bread. 1 baking powder biscuit (34.5)
Mid-afternoon: 1 x fruit scone (coffee shop - this will ruin my numbers today) - (20)
Supper: Curry and 50g basmati rice (26) . Yoghurt & Lemon Cheesecake (from diabetic cookbook) with red berries (20).

So that's a total of 156.5 - hmmnn not quite low carb is it - would have been better without that scone.

But I suspect that it's much lower carb than I ate last Sunday and I did put in a 4 mile walk.

(edit: 2hr test after supper - 6.0 - pleased with that :D )

Couple points you may have missed:

1. Did you have any milk on the weetabix or did you eat them dry?

2. I use the "carbs and cals" app (i have it on android phone) when eating out. It shows a piddly little fruit scone that weighs 38g as having 21g carb, and a more decently sized fruit scone that weighs 66g as having 37g carb. Not sure how big your scone was, but if coffee shop i'd guess maybe a bit more than 20? Nearer 20-30 perhaps?

3. Was there jam on the scone? If there was you'd need to count that next time for bolusing too :)

I would consider it a fairly moderate, low-carb diet. Perhaps dropping the two weetabix and adding some protein to your breakfast would help. But considering the average carb intake is upwards of 200-300g carb a day, you're eating well under that average intake for more exercise than the average adult i'd bet. Sounds good :)

Yesterday went like this:

breakfast: 1 satsuma (8g carb)

lunch: leaves, olives, 2 quorn sausages (9.8g carb), coleslaw (4g carb), 1 satsuma (8g carb), shapers drink (0.3g carb).

snack: 80g of red grapes (12.3g carb)

dinner: turkey, pesto (2g carb), broccoli, fried mushrooms (approx 5g carb together for both), lidl finger of chocolate (9.2 carb)

snack: sunbite crisps (15.2g carb)

pre-bed lidl finger of chocolate (9.2g carb).

Total 83g carb.
BG Range (including 1hrpps) 4.4 - 6.3
No swimming yesterday, so missed my banana :( Will have to swim tonight for it!

Yes, I have semi-skimmed milk with the Weetabix - should I be counting carbs for Milk ?

and no - no Jam with the scone. My wife had the whole pot to herself and ate it with much relish in front of me :x

I've been working on breakfast being fairly big because I swim most mornings and find I need something - so have planned around 50 carbs for breakfast then about 30 for lunch and 40 for supper.

thanks for the help

Hi you'all thanks for this its surprising isn't it when you read what others eat. I have done my first three days testing. Here is what I ate and what I found out is good for me and not so good.
Day 1 scrambled egg, low Gi bread roll and 100ml fresh orange juice my BS was up 5.9points, lunch half a M&S prawn salad, delicious that took me up 3.5 points. (really happy about that they are delicious)
1 bowl home made chicken soup with pearl barley, white fish cooked in mwave and 6 chunky oven chips 1 glass wine BS up 1.7 for supper I had 1 apple and 1 boiled egg. I reckon that to be about 100- 120carbs or so.
Day 2, 3 tablespoons bran flakes and semi skimmed milk i cup of tea sent me up 6.5points Lunch I had a chicken roll sandwich made with hovis light and nutty bread that sent me up 3.3 points. For dinner I had fresh egg noodles about a handful beef in oyster sauce (just enough to coat) and stir fry veg with 1 glass of wine 125ml and for pudding a Muller fat free yoghurt (this was really good and only sent me up 1.5points I reckon this was about 120-130carbs
Day 3 breakfast was 1 apple and 6 grapes this sent my count up 4.4points and lunch 2 slices bacon 2tablespoons baked beans a poached egg and 1 large mushroom and half a low GI bread roll took me up 4.8points, lunch was 4 mini melba toast and hummmus, Dinner beef stew home made with a few boiled potatoes in it and a low fat Muller Rice up 4.4 points again with my glass of wine, I think that was 100-120 carbs.
Its really interesting I will report on next days diet but thanks for the porridge oats double cream idea I had it this morning made with half water/semi skimmed milk and it took me up 7 points, I will try the cream idea next.
I only have smallish portions and don't go mad, trying to keep to around 100 -120 carbs a day at the moment.
Please keep posting your menu's are full of ideas for us newbies.
