What did you eat yesterday

Hi Sharon! Good you're eating then testing. One thing to remember: when you have your red wine with a meal then report a lower increase in blood sugar rise, remember it doesn't necessarily mean the food you had was better. The red wine will lower the amount your blood sugar rose by. Not a bad thing: just means you could draw the wrong conclusions! I love my red wine. Don't drink it every day, but when I do I have one of my more carby meals to take advantage! Some will say that's terrible, but if I'm going to have the wine anyway, might as well get some benefit!
Some people say it then raises your BG later, but I've never found that. Anyway, just thought you should be aware.
Happy eating!

thanks Grazer, I realise the wine masks it all but as pretty much anything I eat sends me up 4 to 8 points and when you start at 11.5 or 12 fasting as I do then it means you grab at any means that helps. I have not found anything and I mean anything yet that raises me less than nearly 4points . How do you manage to get it so that you only move a couple of points, eat lettuce all day would be about the only way I could do it.
All of you seem to be at a far lower level than I am now and presumably were diagnosed at a lower BS level. I was hoping with all this testing I would be able to see some good foods that I could eat and not spike but apparently not. I thought starvation was for famine hit countries not diabetics!
Sharon :(

Know what you mean Sharon, and if could be you need a hand with a bit if extra meds. But there are quite a lot if starchy carbs there. Bran flakes have got quite a lot if sugar compared to shredded wheat fog instance. Muller rice is starchy, I have home made low carb ice cream for a dessert. The low GI bread us still bread, so not great, (lots of us find Burgen soya and linseed bread is the only one we can handle) and are the boiled potatoes "old" potatoes or the little new ones? Old ones send me high, can only handle new ones boiled. I have fresh orange juice at brekky, but lots can't handle it at all. And I'm not sure about pearl barley- I suspect it could be high GI. Don't think I'm being critical, but it took me ages to settle into food types I could handle. Perhaps worth having a good look through the low carb diet forum? Don't have to go ultra low carb, I'm not, but you'll get ideas on the good and not so good foods on there.

Sharon, Grazer always has good advice and he has helped me so much.

I was up in the 12s when first diagnosed. You are doing the right thing testing but remember to keep away from the foods which raise your levels. I tend to stick to meat, fish, veg, eggs and burgen bread but everybody is different.

I now panic if my levels are above 7. I couldn't remember what I started at in September so, after reading your post, I checked my records. I got a surprise and couldn't believe I had been that high (and it was only 4 months ago!)

I am sure that with all the help available to you on here you will soon have your numbers down. And the morning one is the hardest to lower due to the dawn phenomenon.

For brunch today I had 2 square sausages between 2 slices of burgen bread and for dinner tonight I had some cold meat coated in herbs, cauliflower covered in grated cheese and 6 chips. Simple but delicious :) As it's Saturday I have had a few cheats today so I don't expect my reading to be too good 2hrs after dinner. Had some grapes after dinner too -first time since diagnosis so will wait and see what they do to my levels!

Edit: Just tested 2hrs after dinner and it's 6.2. Really happy with that especially as my cheat was 6 thorntons mini fudge brownies throughout the day

Porridge for breakfast – no sugar but a few ounces of currents. Very expensive roll (100g, french) from Waitrose filled with ham, my own giant radish and lettuce. Plus a medium apple and a banana (I have had problems with low potassium – take this seriously if your blood test show low potassium) – and a very small square of high coco chocolate. Dinner was steak fried in rapeseed oil with fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms, Brussels sprouts ( I LOVE them),peas, and 80g of home made bread toasted and spread with butter and home-made plum low sugar jam for 'afters'. Depending on blood, one digestive biscuit or more for supper.

Sharon, remember also that some people posting here may eat some things I've suggested could be tricky, but some are on insulin and other similar meds, so you and I may not get away with some of the things they eat. That's not meant to be disrespectful, but some can get away with things others can't.

Like me :D

But I'm starting to think that it may be possible to remove the insulin one day as I'm now using so little of it (I'm luckily Type 2).

I bought myself a small diary last weekend and now write down my days food along with my estimates of my carb intake.

Todays food was:

1 Weetabix with Milk, 1 slice Burgen and homemade Porridge

Soup, 2 Slices Burgen with Marmite and Cheese, Actimel, Peanuts

200g Lasagne, Stewed Apple with Greek Yoghurt, Diabetic recipe cake type thing

Estimated carbs of 138 (I'm trying to keep below 150 per day). No banana as no exercise today (that's the rule).

For me, Burgen bread has been useful. It's tasty, not too pricey and it lasts a long time. Wife is also happy to eat it which helps. I've noticed my weight dropping too. Not much yet, but a couple of kilos I think since I started.

The Lasagne was a bit of a risk today, but I do have the benefit of being able to jab insulin for it. Before supper I was on 5.7 and 2 hours later I was at 6.0 (with a jab of 4 units of Novorapid).

That's what I was referring to, you can have a treat or make a mistake and correct it which we can't on diet only or metformin. Mixed blessing!

Bought the Burgen bread today so lets hope that helps. I have worked out - Salads for lunch meat and veg for me with a fruit and cream to follow for dinner. And just a slice of burgen bread for breakfast. Just told my husband I will need a whole new wardrobe soon already dropped a size in trousers after 3 weeks of no chocolate and cake. He looked a bit pale, I told him he can't expect me to suffer alone!
Sharon

Hey everyone!

My latest discovery is Bovril! Well, OK, it's not quite a discovery since it's been around for years, but a mug of Bovril is warming, tasty and helps me stop feeling hungry - and it has no impact on BG. I've been struggling to find soup that doesn't spike me, so for me, Bovril fills that gap :)

Smidge

Just had Sunday tea. Asparagus poached for 5 mins, freshly sliced thin Serrano ham, fresh Parmesan shavings, lashings of butter and cracked black pepper. Was YUM and almost no carbs.

Yesterday I had
1 piece of toast hovis light and nuttuy, for lunch egg, 2 slices bacon a square sausage and 3 tbs baked beans with a piece of burgen bread, for tea 1 slice of burgen bread with 2 slices of corned beef, and raspberries and cream. a glass of wine, and supper was 2 squares of 70% choc and a zero jelly. My reading for the very first time was 10.4 before bed and then the fasting one first thing this morning 10 lowest ever reading since I started. Not the best diet (as in amount of veg and fruit) but it was Sunday and I couldn't be bothered. Back to the greens today chicken stew for tea done in the slow cooker, and then the rest of the raspberries with cream. Asparagus sounds lovely grazer.
Sharon :)

Just had my first lunch out since doing this low carb thing and had a tuna steak on a bed of salad stuff (lettuce, peppers, tomato, avocado, french beans etc). This is not my traditional choice - but 2 hrs later and with no insulin I'm reading 5.4 (don't know what I started at but I didn't feel low). Happy with that (though slightly hungry now).

Food and readings today;

Started on 4.1
1 Weetabix then a slice of Burgen toast with a poached egg on it (22g)
Peaked at 6.3

Started at 6.4 (already eaten the Actimel and Peanuts)
Salad with Sausage, Greek Yog & Fruit (v small), Actimel, Peanuts and Tomato Soup (17g)
Peaked at 7.7

Started at 5.5
Chilli with 75g Rice, more greek yog with some blackberry juice (26g)
(will edit once I have the 2hr figure).

Ta da, 65 grams and I haven't taken any insulin all day.

Lasagne with aubergine sheets instead of pasta, nuts, garlic stuffed olives and coffee.

wiflib

The Aubergine sheets sound interesting. Its that something you buy pre prepared or is it just thin slices of fresh aubergine? Did you make it with mince?

Yep, regular lasagne recipe but a sliced aubergine in it. I used to make the ragu sauce with tomato passat but it was simply too carby so I use tomato puree at 0.3g a tea spoon. I also put some finely chopped veggies in with the mince.

The cheese sauce is a mix of cream and any cream cheese in the fridge I may have (philly, marscapone, soft goats cheese) with grated chees in it and heated until all creamy and smooth. Having watched Heston this week, I'm going to try his wine, stock and cheese combo.

Home made moussaka, with aubergines and a lovely cheesy topping made with greek yoghurt
Sliced a carrot into ribbons, with ribbons of spring greens and some broccoli all stir fried, with a very small amount of double cream and nutmeg
was delish.

for breakfast i had scrambled eggs and mushrooms

Lunch was home made vegetable soup, 2 big bowls........
Eat better lowish carbing than Ive ever done
