What do people eat when "out shopping"?

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
I went shopping this morning, In Reading. It's somewhere I rarely go and was searchingf for the ingredients for Fergus's bread. Failed to find Gluten, having tried EVERY health food shop.
I started to feel hunry ( real hunger NOT just the "munchies") I realised I'd not had breakfast. I'd been to the retina clinic with T1 husband. Waited hours. Prognosis not good. Last bleed was behind the retina in the Macular region and has done some real damage. His eyesight is unlikely to recover much.
He can see out of it, but not clearly. the doctor was so thorough and spent ages with him. Since I have an appointment with the clinic in May ( if they don't move it AGAIN) I asked if he'd be there that day. NO he's going back to Lithuania.
Anyway after all that, I went on into town to get those ingredients. Felt hungry and went in to M&S for a coffee. ABSOLUTELY nothing there I could Eat, so made do with the drink and put cream in it. Waited till I got home to have a couple of slices of salami. he I started to wonder what everyone else would do. I know I can have a Chicken salad at MacDonald's, but I wasn't in the mood. I've got a cold and am grouchy.

Ah Hana, I sympathise about the cold and hope you get over it soon.

Our local library has a tea shop which does a mean all-day breakfast.

Regards, Tubs.

You onviously live in civilisation. A library with a cafe is the height of good living. Ours even has the loo on the top floor and the children's library on the ground.

Sorry to hear about your husband's problems, Hana.

Here, we're blessed with a large number of Asian takeaways/cafes, so I generally go for a large kebab with extra salad and leave the bread. Otherwise, we tend to head for Nando's for chicken portions; I understand that they have a couple of outlets in Reading.

Not for everyone, I know.

Civilised? The Council, because it claims to be strapped for cash, is selling the beautiful built-for purpose, Victorian building, and moving it to a new location co-owned by the local "university". I can see services being much reduced, and I dread to think what will happen to the building once it's changed hands. This city once had a rich architectural heritage, much of which was destroyed in the 60s and 70s for concrete monstrosities.

M&S do a prawn cocktail dip thingy amongst other things. How about a burger but not the bun? Do you have a Revolution in Reading? They do a low-carb menu. Anywhere that does cheapo breakfasts tend to be ok. My daughter works part-time in EAT and we are both in the process of trying to get a couple of low-carb options going. Some of their soups are ok.
I've not even tried looking in some of the chain eateries, just presumed they were no good.

I never travel anywhere without an instant soup sachet (ASDA, not good quality but small, hot, handy and only 3 carbs per cup), a bag of nuts and an Atkins choccy bar.

Maybe we could put together a list of chain eateries that have some low-carb options.

Hey Tubs, come to Reading, where fairly recently a 16th century pub in the town centre was pulled down and a concrete monstrosity NOVOTEl put inis place. and the developer who knocked down the listed tram shed, was fined £5,000. Thank God for John Betjemen, or we would have lost our beautiful Victorian town Hall with its Father Willis Organ too. Now it's a concert hall and Museum. The replacement Civic offices, are due for the chop already.

It's funny you should mention Betjemen, I read in the paper recently that the only building in Slough that he approved of is also being pulled down.

As part of my Spring break I'm off to the little church in Cornwall where he's buried...just off Harry and Wills' favourite beach.

Hi Tubs tell Betjemen "thank you !"from me. and have a goo time

OMG, we had a Nando's down the road in Ealing, my ex often brought home a couple of chicken breasts and chips. Without the chips that would still be doable, and delicious! One of the only "fast foods" we found tolerable.

I've been known to cheat and stuff something like a mince pie in my face then walk home really fast, the combination of exercise immediately after eating and what insulin my pancreas can still output lets me do that but I don't make a habit of it. The hospital is far and away the worst place to get stuck without food, there's nothing available that isn't stuffed with carbs and trans fats. I take a couple of oatcakes stuffed with smoked salmon, and a thermos.

Sorry about your husband. Mother went through the same thing, in her case not due to diabetes just being ninety. They found excuses not to treat it until it was too late, well they have to afford their BMWs somehow.
