WHAT DO YOU THINK ????

Hi folks, just wondered what your knowledgeable views are on this. I've recently been having phone consultations with my GP due to him saying i don't need to go in and see him. I've rang when requested, however, this morning i decided to take my results in over the past 14 days so he could have a proper look at them, i told the receptionist that i'd phone this evening as arranged to discuss it with him. Along with the individual tests i gave the 7,14 and 30 day averages:

7 days = 10.9 14 days = 11.7 30 days = 17.8

Yes, for me, these are truly wonderfully reduced results as some of you know :) . Within 30 minutes of dropping them off the practice nurse rang me to say that the GP had looked at these figures and he is now more than happy with them :o . He said that i can remain on the same medication that i'm taking at present and i can contact him in "about" 6 weeks time with further results so he can get an idea of how i'm doing. When i asked could i have a quick word with him about it she said he was too busy to speak to me :o .

The problem i have with this is i think my levels seem a bit on the high side still, i know that the averages mean that i've had some high and low results but i still think these are on the high side to leave it for another 6 weeks or so. Also how can i give him further results when she also told me that he'd said that i must now only test every 4 days and only once a day  . Oh, she did say that i had to vary the times so that i would have a fair average which means that he wants me to test once a week :x . Can anyone explain to me how he can get an average over a six week period with only six test results :? .

Sorry to ramble on but i could really do with your opinions please !!!!!!

... no, 17 really isn't a good average. Hell I'm <mildly irritated>* that my 20-30 day average is 10. Granted I'm type 1, but still...

*family friendly version

What do I think? I think you need a new GP!!This one obviously knows bog all about diabetes!!Get a new one before he kills you Hazey!!!

Take your readings at different times - 1 hour after b'fast, 1 hour after lunch, 1 hour after dinner. Don't confuse him with fasting readings.

You should be able to get a free meter by sending for the ones offered in the Balance mag. I've had several. I use 1 for overnight, 1 at other times, & keep 1 in the car, which I use for tennis.

With each free meter you get 10 test strips. Try phoning your meter help line - they may help you. I was sent a free second meter when they said my existing meter was out of date.

You should of course do at least twice daily tests for your own information & action.

What sort of practice is it? Many large practices have one of the doctors designated a "diabetes lead". While they are not specialists, one would hope that they have a bit more experience and knowledge about diabetes than your average GP. If there is a doctor like this in your practice, you should ask to be transferred to him or her. Failing that, you should demand - in no uncertain terms - to be referred to a specialist.

hazey do your drive? if so then every time you drive you need to test, it's a legal requirement, put that to your GP, there is no way he can refuse to give you enough strips. i can't believe that they want someone on insulin to test so infrequently.

i imagien the doses have been left as they are because the results are coming down, also it's sometimes not the best thing to bring numbers down very quickly

Get to know your local chemist - they have a good basic knowledge & they are very accessible. When I was diagnosed, the education session included a pharmacist who gave that advice. And tell them your complaint with your Dr. They will know who to recommend.

Thanks for the replies, it's just that i seemed to be actually getting somewhere and my health and confidence had started to improve, even my wife said it was nice to be living with me again. I think i'd have felt better if he'd have just kicked me in the nuts. In answer to some of your questions he is the "lead" doctor at the surgery due to him being diabetic himself and yes i do drive not only a car but a motorbike as well, i've just been told by the DVLA that i have to apply for my licence every three years now. I'm going to get as many test strips as i want if he doesn't then i want a bloody good reason why. It has just put such a dent in my confidence again but i'll bounce back again i know i will. Why does it seem to be that just when your getting back on track some tosser comes along and derails you again and the last person in the world you'd expect it to be is your own GP  .

Sorry for moaning !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to echo some of the other comments, you get not very much in this life by being nice to service providers.

He's had his chance to play ball, now unleash the pain on him. Eddie is right (as much as it pains me to admit :D ) send him a letter, clearly stating your concerns and how you would like them rectified. You have a legal right to a second opinion.

If you're not sure, post your letter up here, i reckon more than a few of us are well capable of writing a snotty letter
